Version number
-
Greetings everyone, I want to first start by saying my whole Freelancer start was plaqued by disaster. It was one problem after another. First a ID issue, then a server list not being shown, but I must say that I solved every problem I had with the help of the Starport support forums and all the member posts. Thank you very much! I didnt have to ask one question, just had to take the time to read the forums. I do however have a question that I must have overlooked in the forums. Anyway if its there I apologize for asking but on my server list there are version 4.85. How do I get from 1.1 to ver 4.85? Thanks everyone and sorry to trouble you.

As sabatino said, 4.85 is the Discovery mod. You’ll see many other versions; apart from 1.0, they’re all mods. I’m not sure whether there’s an updated list of mod versions anywhere, but often the mod’s in the server title.
Feel free to look around, there are lots of mods to try

Firstly, thanks for doing the preliminary searches and well done for fixing the problems you had. Good work.
Well, I read the replies about the version number and there is still a hole that should be explained:-
The reason for mods having different version numbers is so that conflicting mods cannot join the wrong server because that will cause a crash.
This is because each mod uses new different equipment.
When you start Freelancer, it looks through the saved player character game files if they exist, and tries to identify each piece of equipment fitted to each character. If the version of Freelancer the player is using does not recognise a piece of equipment and therefore can’t identify it, Freelancer crashes. If it gets past this and connects to the server, and the player tries to use an unidentifiable piece of equipment, the FL Server crashes.
So by changing the version number to a unique one, the modder can try to ensure that players can only connect to his mod, and thereby avoid unrecognised equipment and thereby avoid crashes.
To help with this, most modders have requested and registered a particular version number, or a range of numbers, for their mod only. And other modders have agreed to avoid those numbers.
So when you load a mod, the version number will be different from plain Freelancer and from other mods, and you will only be able to connect to the servers that are running the same mod.

This is where you can request your own version number.

I think several people are mis-interpreting what the original poster asked…he can correct us if wrong.
I would guess he’s a player, NOT a mod maker - so if you are, then ignore those posts telling you how to change your version number or reserve version numbers - it is irrelevant to you
As the others said already - the different versions in your server list are down to modded servers of the game. You can find the mods via Mod DB , or the downloads here (although they’re more difficult to navigate here). There are quite a lot at MODDB, but they give you a list of what sort of changes they make. A lot of the servers have role play though - and I mean strict role play with lots of rules, so I urge you to read each one carefully
To play mods you’ll need the Freelancer mod manager installed first (FLMM is the abbreviated name). FLMM . FLMM lets you manage which mods are “active” upon your freelancer game in a relatively pain free manner. You can simply download a mod, double click on it when it’s downloaded to “install” it to the Mod Manager (if it is flmod format!) and then start FLMM to activate mods. Once activated, start playing the game (if you find crashes, then come back as things like save games and other things can cause crashes!).
Have fun (if this is the info you were after).

If you find another version number than 1.0 at the server list and you want to try out the modification, you should first look at the server name, it mostly will tell you which mod you need.
