Searching for the answer to Freelancer related questions
-
First up Merry Xmas.
Now I don’t post a great deal here, so some of you may think I’m being out of line. However I’m pretty active (on and off) in the Freelancer world and have been using these boards for probably 5 years or so.
One of the reasons I don’t post here so much is that I use the search function. (It’s just over there, top left - little bar says “search…” in it)
I have noticed a great deal new users over the last few months. Welcome to you guys, highly commendable that you’re modding, keep up the good work. It’s not easy. I have a request to all of you.
Guys if you have a question, yes please feel free to ask, but also remember somebody has probably already asked it. Search these sites before asking questions. It’s ver clear to me a number of new users are not either engaging their brains before asking a question, or doing a search before asking (or possibly both).
I’ve noticed a great deal of posts over the last month or so that people asking (often the most basic of) question which already may have a least one thread (often multiple) or a tutorial or similar.
You’ll also learn a lot more about modding and get some great ideas when you’re browsing the search results. If you can’t find it through the search here, google it, if you still cant’ find anthing then post your question.
Guys these forums and archives here and at the TLR are massive. There are topics from modding the basics to the very advanced stuff.
Admins, I’m probably out of line here - this is not a judgement about how you run this place, I’m a great admirer of your work.
I usually get a bit grouchy this time of year. I think it’s the culmination of three months of people telling me what I should buy for xmas and then a week of wrestling people near shops and getting poked in the face by countless umbrellas. Still I’ll enjoy tomorrow and I hope you all do too.
Cheers

You’re entirely correct, actually. People should be searching first, asking second. Thing is, we’ve said it so many times already to no avail that we kind of gave up on the matter
New people won’t bother reading such threads; they’ll just ask straight away. It’s very hard to make them think about it beforehand. Thankfully, our community just about always warmly welcomes them, so I don’t think this is a problem just yet.

Just to add this, sometimes people don’t quite know how to articulate what they are searching for or how to describe exactly what they are after.
As an example someone might search for user interface rather than hud etc, so its not ALWAYS straight forward when it comes to searching I’m afraid. I believe this is why a tagging feature is used widely on forums.
But you are right at least a search would help but sometimes the tutorials are not written in a way that beginners can easily pick up and use.
It’s easy from the perspective of knowing how to search and where everything is to forget that others do not.
Just my thoughts.

Move to Australia, rather than umbrellas poking you, you’ll just sweat like a pig on the spit!
