Sizer's Tutorials

Sizer this is a great start, thank you for your time and troubles, they are very much appreciated.
As you say one needs to love what one does to do this with detail.
And of course to know the modelling package very well to keep the thought going rather than frequently losing track while finding out how to move some vertices!
I gather that Maya is beyond the pockets of most people, is there a cheap (I’m thinking less than $100) modeller that can do similar and has a low learning curve?
I’ve had a go with Blender but for some reason found it a steep curve to pick up methods, whereas 3DSMax was fairly intuitive.
Looking forward to the next in your series.
PS: - Time to remove DVDMan from your sig perhaps?

First, I’ll say that all autodesk products are free for anyone with a valid student email.
Freewise, I’ve messed with Blender in the past, never got too into it. I’ll probably have to try it again, as that was years ago, and my skill level wasn’t quite what it is now. Wings 3D is a good starting solution. It’s UV Mapper is a far cry from decent, last I looked, and it doesn’t have a built in renderer (however that isn’t important for getting stuff in game). If GMAX still exists, its a gimped version of 3ds Max. No renderer, not many export options, but it did have most of the modelling functionality of 3ds Max.
Beyond the free options, there is no real middle ground, cost wise. Its go big or go home. Though then there’s stuff like LightWave, which was THOUSANDS of dollars back in the day…
As for my sig… never. Never ever ever.

Good to know that students can get free licences, does this include Maya?
Maybe I can convince my niece to get a copy and load it on my PC (for her own use when she visits us, of course!)
I have a legit copy of GMAX12, I did find it easy if I remember (I was just starting out and switched to MilkShape). But it must be very dated now if there isn’t a new release?
The modelling can be done in so many modellers anyway wth good results, and then the problems are really in breaking the model into groups and making the .sur files. Both of these are straightforward now with Schmack’s sur tool.
The biggest problem (to me at any rate) is texturing nicely.
So, your tutes are a very welcome gift Sizer, thank you.

Just watched a bit of your tutorial and it’s quite good mate, cheers for taking the time to make it.
It’s been quite a few years since I’ve played around with Maya but I remember I just couldn’t get the hang of it at the time, thou now I’m starting to have a change of heart as it looks really attractive and I really like the UI layout and menus. -
My school’s made a believer out of me when it comes to Maya. I used to swear by 3ds Max. When it comes to renders, I still kinda do, its far more powerful in that respect… but when it comes to building geometry and uv layouts… nothing beats Maya.

Nice Part II Sizer. Thanks for continuing this series.
Err… check out your link to the nVidia DDS/Normals plugin please. I think it is fascinating!
-
Uh, I don’t use PS, it’s too expensive, do you have a Gimpshop alt?
-
I need the GIMP 2.6 plugins for DDS, otherwise my project is at a virtual standstill.
-
Yeah, just got them, the latest iteration for 2.6 the others won’t be so useful. I can’t use Gimp 2.8 kept getting crashes dealing with larger files.
UPDATE: I’m gonna make an original R-Type vessel for Discovery, perhaps the first of many original designs. Is that OK? They’ll each get a vessel-bound superweapon based on their purpose and design. How cool is that?
