Can't Install, file in use
-
When I try to install the game it says:
Freelancer setup needs to modify the file : c:\programfiles(x86)Microsoft Games\freelancer\exe\freelancer.exe which is currently in use by another application
So, I tried run the install file as admin and set the file in the exe folder to admin and both to XP SP3 compatibility, no go. Tried copying all the files to the HD then installing, can’t copy the freela_1.exe file. Tried installing to a different location with no luck. Went through my registry and cleaned out freelancer files, still won’t install.
Any ideas?

You didn’t say what OS you are using. With Vista-7 I have noticed a new Microsoft quirk that has been occuring since the June updates. After a cold restart FreeLancer will open, but not run. It says it is running in Task Manager and if I tell it to end process, it will then run.
If this is not your problem then try deleting the entire directory, doing a re-start and then do a fresh install. If that still fails, try cleaning the CD with a clean moist (no tapwater) towel. If there are scratches, use an optical quality cloth to rub them out. If this fails, you may need to open your wallet and buy a replacement.

using Windows 7
I tried cleaning it really well and the disk is in great shape. Still won’t install though. Oh well.

You may be able to rename the Freelancer folder or the freelancer.exe file…
Then restart your PC and then you may be able to delete the folder completely.
I always delete the entire folder before re-installing.
But then - who am I?

If your disk is in great shape and you are doing a clean install, only one question remains. Are you doing the install as an administrator? Vista-7 is very anti-user and will not work without those permissions. I use it on this computer and really reminisce Win-XP. When the pop-up window opens and you select the install, it should do another pop-up to verify running Setup.exe.
If you want to test your CD, copy the files to a temporary directory. If they copy, everything’s ok. Don’t make a copy CD, MS alters sectors as copy protection. In theory, you probably could install with such a CD, but you will need your original to run the game. OR you can use no-cd, which is not legal in some countries. Yea!
Anyway, whatever I do with 7, I always take the long way and run things as administrator. You know, the ominous “screen goes dark”, “pop-up appears” and you have to give yourself permission to use your own computer. It’s a pain, but what the hey.Pascal05

For easy frequent use I made an image (.iso) of my FL CD using ImgBurn and I use Virtual CloneDrive (a virtual CD/DVD drive) to mount it when I need to.
