It seems to me the genre isn't so dead anymore.

Somehow interesting in which way Freelancer isn’T distributed ANYWHERE anymore. Maybe someone has the motivation and energy to ask MS about distributing it on Steam or sth.

I still see the game sold on Amazon, which is where it’s been for years. I doubt we’ll see the game on digital distribution unless Microsoft suddenly wakes up.
That GOG wishlist has been there for years and has never changed a thing.

SpaceForce: Rogue Universe, Darkstar One?
These game just simpley too bad, not deserve any notice.
I actually more like this one:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joshparnell/limit-theory-an-infinite-procedural-space-gameAnd the Black Prophecy looks not bad.
But those game above I’ll never play.
My favored game is kind like EVE where you can play online with your friend anytime + X-Spaces (e.g. X3 etc) allowing you build something in it.
Too bad there is no such game can fit in to this sort. Freelancer however is one that closest to it (You can do mod for building).
Too bad that my computer knowledges only just make me able to make web pages
(OK, and models, and textures and little bit of C++ and little bit of other programming languages.)
In my imagination, there is a space game like this:
1, The map is generated by the game itself. Maybe on server, and client just download it in real time. (I’m not saying seamless map, wormhole is good enough)
2, There must have a NPC controlled area for most new player to be. And NPC force must be strong enough to expand to new area (Even conquer / commandeer player’s land controlled by some dynamic parameter). Out this area, you on your own. Space itself is unlimited, generate as you go.
3, You can build anything at free area, and form any sort of group you like. Space is so huge, when you go far enough, no one can bother you. (Although, something out there you can’t make by your own, so you must maintain the connection with players and NPCs)
4, I don’t care how I should control my vehicle, just make it can be done by my own. (No crew needed)
EVE has a big map. But the map is so bad, and so small.
Bad because everything on map is known, just data points, public shared. But the real thing is, it’s impossible.
Some area in the map must be secret, no space station information, no player information, just a little mark of wormhole network, good enough. Those system can be called the outer most system or unexplored system for explorers and new groups.
Small is because, the map is fixed. Say you have a new group want to grow secretly, and then somebody look the map and say: Hey there is some new guy, let’s attack them. And you will fail.
============ Spilt ============
Well, guess that’s why when I planing for my mod, I make it huge and create spilted area which hard to across. And finaly failed because it’s too hard for me to make

Starpoint Gemini 2 is a great crack, mod support via steam workshop too

“And the Black Prophecy looks not bad.”
Aren’t the servers down for it meanwhile?“1, The map is generated by the game itself. Maybe on server, and client just download it in real time. (I’m not saying seamless map, wormhole is good enough)”
AFAIK Star Citizen will do that. Not sure about Elite: Dangerous. To my knowledge, Vega Strike (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/) does this as well (open souce).Else I heard the “Space Suit”-Series are quite good.
“I still see the game sold on Amazon, which is where it’s been for years. I doubt we’ll see the game on digital distribution unless Microsoft suddenly wakes up.”
TBH recently I was thinking about if I/someone should email MS and ask about what stops them from distributing it by GOG/Steam. -
I’m actually talking the Game itself…… not MP stuffs.
And the whole “generated map” thing is truely just a simple point of “You can hide large secrets in the game any people will hardly (not can’t) found it.”
I doubt about Star Citizen or etc will reach that scale.
=========== This post actually end right here ==========
And I don’t like Star Citizen because:
1, Robert seems a military fans, but only instrumentally, but also culturally (Take look those military salutes in the video). + I’m not an American.
2, I play game for fun, so when I finally had a battleship, then I better hire people to piloting / operating it? This will limit the game to a very little small scale.
(Let’s say EVE online got 10,000+ onlines at same time, suppose you got 3 people on same ship in avg, now you only have 3000+ ships in 7000+ systems, how lone you will be. So you have to limit the system scale to maintain the populations)
3, And they adding FPS now? How about space baby rising? With that you can play the game in your whole life time long LOL.
So the whole Star Citizen thing for me just like another kind of Starlancer, in that game, I got killed by the Japanese commander a million times and I finally realize the ANS ships is apparently better target for my torpedo.

I also really like Limit Theory, I think the creator was a big FL fan.
As for Elite Dangerous, just recently downloaded the launcher but it crashes when I start it (the launcher, not even the game…) - even for Freeworlds we have a better launcher
I’m not sure about Star Citizen. We still have to wait and see how the persistent universe turns out, but the detail level sort of prevents really large scale battles with lots of ships.
By the way, soon (I guess months away) there will be another kickstarter, this time for Infitiy: https://inovaestudios.com/

If there’s one game I’m even less convinced of the devs delivering than Star Citizen, it has to be Infinity… That game has been vaporware for almost a decade now.
