Vista Issue
-
Vista saves the savegame data a little differently…. depending on if you have 1 user or more… i found that out the hard way loool… not shure if “this” is your problem… but it might be…
oh and about the Vista bashing (hehe) I’ll handle Basic / Home & Buisness Bashing!! lol (yuck!! i agree) but i got
Premium… and it works fine… for everything… lol ;D ;D (including old dx7-6 games!!)Trick is to “fire” the big (useless) bouncer at the front door … “escuse me sir… i’ll have to see your papers there… hmm cancell or allow??” <<-- you know the slow git that takes 2 min to decide if he’ll let u in the club or not … (AV/Firewall will do that fine hehe). and to ignore half the “compatability” errors… well half anyway… hehe and ALWAYS USE ADMIN SETTING!!
Sry hot day… brain melting away…

It’s nothing to do with the save location. It can’t possibly be. 1) That is not related to ‘lag’ and 2) he is the client. All his info is stored on the server.
Does he use an x86 or x64 version of Vista? I know that 64-bit versions of XP could always cause strange things like that. And I know certain hardware setups with multi-core processors can have wierd timing issues. I’m not sure there is any way to combat that. Perhaps try a CPU affinity tool to force the executable to run on one of the cores (or just to foreceably isolate one) to see if that works.
And I know it aint that helpful, but has the compatibility mode been used? Worth a shot. As it’s lag and nothing else (from what you’ve said), perhaps updating his chipset and network card driver is worth a go. I had an issue once, which was similar but for a different game and a driver update did the trick. Also, if it’s onboard LAN, perhaps a BIOS update is also worth a go, although more unlikely to fix it.
Firewalls can sometimes kill freelancer, particularly those that work by installing a network filter driver into the TCP/IP stack. An older version of zonealarm I had caused this unplayable behaviour. The latest works now, but I do remember that happening once. I hear comodo is a pain too in certain situations. Making sure the windows firewall isn’t enabled at the same time as a 3rd party one is again, worth looking at.
Tell him to do a spyware scan too with something reputable like Spybot S&D or malware bytes anti-malware, then before he tries it all again, reset the winsock catalogue to defaults. Start -> Run -> “CMD”. Then typing: “netsh winsock reset”, followed by a reboot.
Maybe…

This issue isnt new and/or vista related
However a little workaround would be if a other nice guy would create him the characters (maybe also undocking from NY), after the first undock the problem is solved, afaik.
(Or at least nearly)Of course he should share his ID (or a new one) only with trustful persons like you Gibbon, or another admin.

Thx Bas but that doesn’t explain why it’s happening. When he had XP on his old machine, everything was fine and he could create up to his alloted 5 chars without issues. This has only been an issue since he got Vista so i know that’s involved somehow

@Bas:
This issue isnt new and/or vista related
Perhaps you would enlighten us as to what the issue is then, as you seem so certain?

Gibbon,
Please let us know how he gets on. If there is a feasible solution to solving this, we could turn it into a walkthrough and post it for all to use in the future.

Because I am sure about that also other OS users had this problem

One thing to remember with Pishta is that the “Program files” folder is a protected folder, this means that you can’t write back to this folder. When you activate a mod the files aren’t actually being added to your Freelancer folder, instead place holders are added and the mod files are sent to your “Virtual Store”, this might be whats causing problems for some.
-
‘lag’ & ‘disconnects’ never only have the one cause. All sorts could cause it. Which is why I asked for specifics…

@ Bejaymac ;D
soo true… i never run FL out of Program files… always a seperate folder for all mods…
and vista is quite narcy about what you do to program files… especialy over a network…
this maybee worth o look into… hmm ;D ;D -
Firstly thanks to all the advice - this has been a nightmare 4 me.
Secondly a number of workarouns helped - if only temporary - particulary turning off unnecesry services and startup items (not sure which was the culprit!!)
I think (hope) the problem is now resolved but not sure how!
1. Admin created multiple new chars for me ;D
2. Havin read some other posts I noticed some players have had issue with AVG - particularly after the new update
3. Before playin this mod I had a problem with AVG and had uninstalled it - unfortunately it wasn’t clean and left email scanner and watchdog on my system
4. I then reinstalled AVG and got it working properlly, howvee when trying to reconnect to the server i only giot as far as the server list
5. I uninstalled AVG again - this time clean - I can now connect and have all 5 chars up and running. ;D
6. Played 2nite for 3 hours - no lagg or loss of connection!!!For the record my OS is Visat 64bit
Thanks again for all the advice and I hope this explanation is of use to others.

I have also read at the HC forums that the 3D-Sound may can create such a problem (losing connection to server after undocking from manhattan with a new char)
