First Order of Business: Admission
I am a noob to not only this board, but also to the game itself. Weight removed from chest, insert sigh of relief here.Second Order of Business: Personal Intro
My name is Matt, i live in the barren wasteland known as Minnesota. Contrary to popular belief, there is in fact an area of civilization up here, full of culture, history and entertainment. This area is Minneapolis - St. Paul, more commonly referred to as the Twin Cities, or “The Cities” if you live in North Dakota, South Dakota or Iowa, where there is even less civilization than in MN. This is where i reside, in a nice suburb about 5 minutes south of the Mall Of America. I am 23 years of age, i am an avid gamer, and i play in the nations best competitive organized Wiffleball league. I have an extremely overactive sense of humor, and i vary my stylings from sarcastic to absudly random, whatever gets a laugh.Order of Business the Third: Freelancer Experience.
I recently borrowed it from a friend of mine because i got the red ring of death on my 360, i burned myself out on EVE Online(anyone who plays, look me up – Magnus Cahn) by playing it for about 8 hours a day for two weeks straight and needed a change of pace and a fresh mix of games. I borrowed 4 games all of which of the older variety, and Freelancer is the only one that i was able to successfully play. I began my first game of single player and found that i am actually quite terrible at the game… i got blowed-up a number of times on the mission involving escorting a convoy to a station through an ice field by way of beacons. For some reason, i then decided to try to explore if there was any multiplayer going on, but i found no servers in the list, so i went to the microsoft homepage and found the announcement that the servers were taken offline. I figured i was probably going to then be limited to single player, so i figured id look for a fan site to see what i could find. I stumbled upon this site, and i am very shocked that the game is not only still alive, but seems to be continuing to have a very healthy career.Final Order of Business: Intent.
My purpose here is that i would not only like to find a way to not suck at the same, but also to find some folks to play it with thru multiplayer and whatnot. I am currently terrible, ive said it before, but i just want to make that crystal clear. I noticed that there are mods that are to explain why i couldnt find any compatible servers, i guess i should probably find one of those to download. With those mods, i imagine im quite far behind in terms of knowledgeability regarding the ships, weaponry, and whatnot… but i am a quick study. So to you, the masses of The Starport Forums, i present myself as a pile of scrap metal with the desire to be built into a competent Freelancer, and then enjoy the game for quite some time to come as part of my regular mix of games. I have a Headset with Microphone and Skype for those that use it, and am also familiar with teamspeak and ventrilo… I am up at all sorts of odd hours right now, because im unemployed and job hunting, and i almost always carry my positive attitude with me whenever i play. I await the highly varying responses i’m undoubtedly going to get.
Cheers,
Gusto -
Greetings and welcome to the Starport.

Hello and welcome to the Starport.
As for being a self-proclaimed n00b, don’t worry about that, there’s hundreds of them out there playing Freelancer so, you should feel right at home. ;D
If you want to try to improve your gaming in Freelancer, be sure to look at the Multiplayer Gaming list when you click on the Multiplayer icon after you log onto the game. You can view the list and see what servers are most active and the ones that are not. Some may require that you use an additional mod, like the one specifi\cally required for thier server, (those will show up in a different color and/or the version other than 1.0 will be in red) then, try to come here or check other Frreelancer Communities/Websites and try to find the specified mod/s. Other than that, find you a simple 1.0 and jump on it. The game play will be a little different than in SP and, you’ll not have to be stuck with just one ship/character, you’ll be able to create 5 characters and then you can enjoy more gaming experience and not have to sell your ship just to try to test a newer one unless you want to. Just create a new char with a name for it and log on. You can create a Trade char for just exploring and trading or, you an also create a Pirate char and raid everything, etc…etc…etc…
But always remember to abide by the rules of the server and there will be some ingame Console messages with informationas to what’s, what on the server you’re on.
Hope this helped and you enjoy your time online. Just remember,
“One mistake out here is all it takes.”

Hey mate,
Glad to have you with us. Once you finish the game, be sure to check out alot of mods. Don’t just try one of them, try a bunch. This game has alot of life in it. And it seems each mod brings a new flavor and makes the game feel “new again”. I look forward to one day seeing you in-game on the servers I frequent.
Forsaken
P.S. Oh by the way, if you want to learn how to mod the game, you came to the right place. ;D

Welcome to our little spot of sanity in the chaos. ;D
No worries on the Noob Status, everyone starts at square one.
While Starport might seem mostly geared towards the creation and promotion of modifications, there is still plenty that will help you if you speak up and ask questions in the correct areas. The Ingame Tips and Tutorials Area seems a good example offhand.
Glad to see you found us here M8.

Welcome aboard.
As it was said before, we all started as newbies too, so don’t worry about it. You’ll improve with time.
There are many fine mods around. Specially on this place, which is the current main hub of most of the freelancer communities out there. Here you will find players and Admins from almost every MP mod in existence. You should try some mods, to see which one fits your style…

Welcome to the community MFGusto, you’ll find a lot of friendly and helpful ppl around here, us old dogs have been teaching them :P.
Unfortunately it looks like some of them need to go back to school :P, Microsuck shut down the MP Global List Server just over 18 months ago, but thanks to some clever ppl in this community we have a community GLS as well as a GLS workaround.
W0d4a released the workaround shortly after M$ shut thiers down, it’s a sort of plug-in that you install directly into you Freelancer directory, it then allows you to see all of the servers that have registered with it.
The community GLS is down atm, Crazy (creater & owner) fried his machine, so until he’s back up it’s offline.
The Workaround is the last item on this page <–- LINK
Info on Crazy’s GLS can be found HERE scroll down to October to find 2 methods of pointing Freelancer to it.
Or if your not scared of playing with the files you can just edit it yourself, find where you installed Freelancer and navigate to “Microsoft games/Freelancer/Exe/”, in here you’ll find a file called freelancer.ini (looks like a text page with a cog on it), open it with notepad.
Look for a section that looks like this -
[listServer]
;;;hostname = localhost ;Your local machine
;;;hostname = FLListServer2.dns.corp.microsoft.com  ;GUN server in Austin
;;;hostname = 131.107.135.190 ;GUN server in Redmond
hostname = fllistserver.zone.msn.com ;GUN server in Redmond (DNS entry)port = 2300
Replace the highlighted part with the following and save -
hostname = gun.fllistserver.com ; GUN server provided by www.fllistserver.com

This is actually the first day i’ve been back on here in awhile too, got really busy with those ever pesky real life issues… mostly job hunting and trying to sort out my schedule… havent touched freelancer in about a month… hoping to find some time this week to actually log on to a server for the first time and putz around… perhaps ill see one of the many people who have posted here… recommendations for certain mods would be appreciated, im going to try to compile a list of good ones that are popularly used, as i noticed there are quite a number of mods out there, and instead of individually trying the hundreds out, id like to find a small few to rotate around, help is appreciated. Thank for all the kind words and knowledge thus far folks.
