Blast from the past

Couldn’t say actually, I didn’t start playing Freelancer until April or May of 2003 and this is before my time.

I think the project was started in 1999 but not completely finished until MS put their 2-cents into it and then in March of 2003 they finally went public with it.
And thanks. Not sure why I couldn’t get it to work. o_O
What ever happened to Chris Roberts anyway, does anyone know?

**He is making movies, he just came out with one just a few months ago.

You can also go here, 7 Crows and read more about Chris Todd, another writer for Freelancer.
I think Freelancer is in his 2003 Archives.

What i find very interesting after reading the Nomad background story is the fact that there is absolutely no mention at all of them ever visiting Earth. It would seem the original video shipped with FL was correct based on that story. Earth and the rest of the planets were never destroyed because the Nomads never left Sirius… Interesting

I took the liberty of contacting one of the programmers from FL, in a quest to see if he’d tell me what is actually in the EXE file that we can still use. I figured if you don’t ask you don’t get, and asked him about the HUD situation. This is the reply i recieved,
“There were an unusual number of iterations of the HUD over the course of developing Freelancer… the 3d radar never quite worked out… it took up too much screen space and was still hard to readup/down/front/back so we ended up going with the peripheral version. The code and graphics for the older interface don’t exist in the final game”
Straight from the horses mouth so to speak, so if someone wants to do this, it will have to be from scratch. He didn’t let on any more although i’m still gently trying to get more info. I’ve left his name out so he doesn’t get into trouble.
