Questions, questions, I think this may be the place to ask.

I’ve not been playing Freelancer very long, as I imagine is indicated by my registration date, and I hadn’t even become aware of it until last year by a friend’s mentioning of it. The allure I found with it from what he described was the freedom, the exploration, and the like. However, and I should note I’ve yet to tamper with the multiplayer aspects of the game due to a desire to finish the single player first, I’ve found myself sort of locked into factions due to reputation.
I seem to recall encountering similar problems in other games, and I have read of methods of maneuvering around this reputation issue, but I’m quite curious as to if there are any more…Legitimate, means to do so. (That is to say, not popping open the game’s files and altering a few lines of code.)
Other basic questions I have would more or less regard the nature of multiplayer, as in, are the servers just modified versions of the single player systems or completely redefined systems put together?
I hope this is the appropriate place to post this, and if I’m repeating previous questions, it wasn’t my intent, as I did glance over the subject lines of all the threads in this section of the forums prior to registering and posting. Many thanks to any who may respond.
Edit: Well, not this section, but the support section. I’m a poor shot at thread placement.

I’ve moved your post to the appropriate section. For future reference, the Support forum is mainly for technical issues
As for your questions, well first welcome to The Starport and to the Freelancer community as a whole! I hope you find your place and have a lot of fun here. You’re always welcome to ask questions.
First of all, reputations in FL are very flexible. If you find yourself in a situation you’d like to change, just kill a ton of ships. If you want to befriend the Outcasts, for instance, just blow up Liberty Police/Navy or Corsairs and your reputation will soon be in the green with them. Each faction has their enemies listed in their information card when you look at your stance with them.
Multiplayer is really a totally different experience from what we call “vanilla”, that is the unmodded, fresh-off-the-CD game. You’ll find everything. Some mods are 95% vanilla, some keep the storyline but entirely change the gameplay, balance or looks, and finally some throw it all out and are total conversions, often to known universes.
For starters, I’d direct you to the ModDB page for Freelancer, where you’ll find most big mods. Additionally, I can tell you we’re proud to have four mods in the Top 100 of the Mod of the Year 2009 awards, which you can see here. Check them out, you won’t be deceived!
Hope you have fun and be sure to ask any question you may have.

Ah, I had suspected that was the method of doing so, but with a lack of time to properly experiment with it, I couldn’t make out any significant alteration in reputation. I’ll have to give that a more thorough attempt. Thanks!
As to mods, I’m actually familiar with ModDB, and I recall seeing one of the more recent (the one on the front page, if I’m not mistaken) mods on there that helped influence my decision to locate a copy of Freelancer. Thanks for the info on the mods though, I was semi-aware of the large modding community behind this game, but not to the extent they had taken their mods or were capable of taking them.

Hi and welcome. The mods currently out there and some of the ones in development are the future of FL imho. There will always be the group of players who are dedicated to “vanilla” and won’t hear of any modifications at all. You only have to look at the server listings to see how few vanilla servers are left.
These days people want more variety, they want to fly ships from their favourite tv shows and be immersed in systems with a storyline that reflects that. I could name loads of good mods that do all of those things. Modding FL has been what’s kept the game going all these years and is the games future, what’s left of it lol
As FF pointed out, a lot of good mods are hosted on MODDB, with plenty of others in development, so there’s plenty of choice from currently available mods plus tasters from what’s coming. I’m sure something will tickle your fancy

Huhu, welcome!
If you are going to change a reputation quickly just had for a bribe at a bar. But they are very expensive at the very beginning of the game.
Also, missions allow to change your reputaion more quickly.
