Can i host a freelancer server on a dynamic ip?
-
If the IP is dynamic it means it somehow resets periodically. Unless he does something for it (IE turns off the modem), then chances are the players will get disconnected on IP changes. There’s also the pain of constantly having to update the IP given to players (better use the GLS in that case).
Apart from that there isn’t anything that stops you from doing it, no.

Yeah same would happen if he were to restart his pc. I really hate it when isps give people dynamic ips. The only problem i see is would the GLS notice the new ip straight away? or would there be a delay for it to update the list. as i pretty much dont want to run into problems with people not being able to connect.

The GLS has no update delay.

Besides the all new global:
If you use a dynamic IP provider like - say - no-ip.com,
you might have a adress like - say - “iwanttoplay.no-ip.info”
and could reach your game server with a “lan setting” like
“…\EXE\Freelancer.exe -siwanttoplay.no-ip.info:2302”.No need for knowing / updating the IP.

thats a good idea too! now though that woudlnt show up under the gls? as i want to arrect people from the GLS and have a way of manualling connecting to the server.
I dont really want people to run into issues trying to connect to the server via the gls due to the ip changing etc etc. But the no ip i know of and have used for other games aka WoW. i just wasnt sure if it would work for freelancer when im not sure about things i will usally post up and ask.
but having a dynmamic ip could cause issues to remote connect with the server too? As my friend will be hosting the server ill most likely be managing it via remote connection
Meny thanks

A dynamic IP will only change if you turn your modem off, even then it doesn’t always. I ran FL servers for years on a dynamic IP in the UK (nearly all ip’s are dynamic in the UK, exceedingly rare to have a static one), never had a problem as i didn’t turn my modem off. That’s the secret, as long as it will be a 24/7 server, you won’t have a problem. You can switch off your pc a thousand times, it doesn’t matter, just leave your modem on. I’d run it from behind a router as well for added security.
I almost forgot, my current IP up here in Sweden is dynamic, still run a server with no issues and i leave the modem on all the time
-
Yeah I ran a server for a year on a dynamic IP also, never turning off the modem works, and the GLS through fllistserver as long as its setup right in the server freelancer.ini to include it, it works just fine with IP changes. Also there is the GLS workaround which you might wind up using also, however you have to update it manually on its site(takes about an hour max) . flserver.de
Yeah don’t ever shut the modem down and you should be ok,
-
Well, I sometimes had an IP change in the past (24hours-disconnect)
But sometimes the time when it does happen can be configured in the router settings
-
Then get a better connection is all i can say Bas. Your router shouldn’t change the IP, why would it? Only thing that changes the IP is your ISP or a modem reset or modem powering down. This is why as i’ve already mentioned, you leave the modem switched on 24/7, which most definately helps things.
Sure a dropped connection “might” change your IP, and there’s no guarantee that will happen either, certainly regular drops in connection wouldn’t be good and increase the possibility of an IP change. That happens to me about once a year if that, which i can live with.
The router certainly won’t change your IP, mine doesn’t even have that option (Linksys) and if yours does, then configure so it doesn’t, that would be the last thing you need.
-
Well, afair it did in the past but it doesn’t do for about a year or so - Other router and so on.
But keep in mind that you might need a very nice upload stream for a Freelancer server.
-
A 20 player server will happily function on a 1MB upstream. Anything bigger and yes i agree, more upstream the better. I have 10MB up and down so i can host much larger numbers, but for most people, specially these days, doubtful you will see more than 20 players on a server.

I was waiting for that comment sigh. Discovery have built up there community over many years, and it offers what their community wants, which is a large RP environment. The thing you’re forgetting is it’s not everyones cup of tea, which is why there is so much variation from other mods and communities who offer different options. RP isn’t the be all and end all.
There are other problems associated with large communities, the rogue element who invade other servers advertising the Discovery mod which the admins can do nothing about. I’ve had nothing but grief from so called Discovery players invading my server and advertising, which is why 90% of people banned from my server are allegedley from that community. This is a problem i’ve made the admin team aware of which is why i pass any banned ip addys to them.
Discovery is an exception to the rule, they’ve worked hard for their success and good luck to them. I just wish some members of their community were as level headed as their admin team.
To get back on track here, the point is very simple. If you want bucketloads of people on your server, then get as much upload speed as you can. If you average out 20 players per MB, you won’t be far wrong.

If you go to www.dyndns.com you can get yourself a hostname then using the dyndns update tool have that record updated automaticly when ever your ip changes . Then you can provide people with a url that will always point to your ip
For example change the path value in freelancer shortcut
Right click on the shortcut, select Properties and click on Shortcut tab. In a field called Target path add the following
-s example.webhop.net:2302Hope that helps.
*Edit: just noticed F!R already posted solution on previous page…. is what happens when you skim read threads. Oh well least its alternative provider of dynamic hostname service.
