[Modelling Tutorial] Creating Custom Planets Guide 1

Thx for your answer OPR8R
In this guide posted here the author wrote at the end:
Look out for the other way of creating custom planets which makes use of the sph files (built in collision detection, textures and size definition) and atmosphere effects
any way to get a tut of it?or to learn it? ^^
Seems, that the guide only provides planets without atmosphere/collision <.< -
Hehe, its on my list of thigns to do buddy, just need to find a few hours to write up a tutorial on it
busy with my course atm lol
to use vanilla planets and retexture them is not that easy as they dont really have normal sphere maps
the workload needed to turn a normal spheremap into the tiles which are placed on the vanilla planets so that they fit together is massiveTrue, it can be hard, but it is certainly do-able, i know of a few programs that can make the textures required for you.

You can also import a sphere mesh with a cylindrically wrapped texture. Then you add a sphere sur for collision detection. To add an atmosphere you can use a sph object without the planet but containing the atmosphere settings placed in the center of the sphere mesh.

I was playing around with this very subject for the past week.
Once you have the tools (all available) it’s a breeze to do, and of course each person’s work is going to reflect his/her own creative ability - mine is about 2 on a scale of 1-10.
Here’s the method so far, what is missing is an easy way to add the atmosphere mist. Hope it’s usefui:-

have you not tried just adding the material_library = solar\planets\atmosphere.txm into the mix? aslong as the mat file contains a referrence (iirc) to it, should just work, been a while since i looked at planets, not needed to pull the info out of the archive in my head

or
– break a sph file to get this effect http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/22/screen32nl7.png -
yep thats what i meant… custom planet with original atmosphere
aye, tho, you gotta admit, just the effect on its on has some potential use somewhere. Some is easily done just break many sph files XD as to the WHERE part… i have no idea how this could be used except custom planets.

Some sort of shield effect would be pretty fitting IMO.
-
Well so far I haven’t had the time to break an .sph file - see my avatar!, but it looks very simple in a hex editor.

Updated the link in my post, download now works XD

Anyone has saved this tut?
The Link is dead…
