Usually it is a Function key in combination with an Fn key (similar to Shift and Ctrl, but Fn). For example, on my laptop, Fn+F5 cycles through the available displays.
Look closely at the icons on your Function keys for something that looks like a monitor.
Does Freelancer run after the error? Or does it exit?

Not convinced that an external monitor will fix it, the graphics processor is the same and is not recognised as an accelerator by FL.
Is there anyone here running on the 950/945 chip?
Mine is the Intel Extreme 852/855GME set and is OK despite giving me compatibility warnings - these stopped after I updated the EXE\flconfigdatabase.txt file with my own driver number.
Go get the updated flconfigdatabase.txt file from here and put it into your EXE folder:-
http://eoa.seriouszone.com/download.php?file=fldeviceidsIt contains the following entries for your 945/950 chipset:-
// 9xx series not supported under 9X or ME
0x2772 = “945G Express Chipset Family” // added by Louva-Deus 4/16/2007
0x2776 = “945G Express Chipset Family” // added by Louva-Deus 4/16/2007
0x27A2 = “945GM Mobile Express Chipset Family” // added by Louva-Deus 4/16/2007
0x27A6 = “945GM Mobile Express Chipset Family” // added by Louva-Deus 4/16/2007Hope it works for you, please let us know?

I have a laptop with a 945GM and Freelancer works fine on it, including every mod I have tried (except for the Advanced Shader). That is why I asked Florence7 whether Freelancer runs after the message or whether it is just the usual warning caused by the controller not being in flconfigdatabase.txt.
Florence7 is using a netbook, and it is cool that she can run vanilla Freelancer on it! However, most netbooks do not allow the controller to use much memory (8mb on my Acer). THAT would be a larger concern than the controller itself.
The reason that the external monitor is important is that the default resolution for netbooks is 1024x600. A larger monitor would be required to test at resolutions other than 800x600.
To Florence7, there is a well-known warning that is harmless. We need to know whether that is the message you are receiving. The easy way to know is that, if Freelancer continues to run after the message, then it is harmless.

i also get this error when trying to run NSU mod strange seeing as all my other mods run fine. i have an msi u135 with an atom N450 1.66 processor. according to device manager it is an intel graphics media accelerator 3150 if that helps at all.
sorry i dont have any advice to fix it but i thought i would add my name to the list off people who need help with this:) -

im trying to run fl nightstalkers universe mod on asus eee pc 1001ha 950gma integrated graphicsI installed Nightstalkers Universe and see that it installs the ENB Advanced Shader, which is well-known to be troublesome. Even worse, NSU gives you no option to turn off the ENB shader.
I tested on a netbook with gma 950 and confirmed that it will not run. The error produced is fatal (to Freelancer – luckily not to the player ).
The solution is easy: Delete the d3d8.dll file in the Freelancer\EXE folder. Or just move the file out of the EXE folder.
This dll is only used for the ENB shader. Vanilla Freelancer does not have it. Removing it should not effect game play, although some features may not look exactly as intended.
I confirmed that I was able to connect to the NSU server with d3d8.dll removed.
