Cursing - A reason to ban???
-
The decision to ban someone normally an admin decision. As pages are normally (but not mandatory) his property - he can decide who may watch it nor not. There must not even been given reasons - as far as i understand. There is no rule about that you have privileges on another ones site.
Of course thats also a question about common sense, being social etc. pp. I mean there are also other sides of the medal. I would prefer to talk with the person that had a misbehaviour - normally there are reasons when it comes to swearing. If the issue is solvable then its good. If not than the ban is justified (legally seen there must not been given reasons tho).
@Gibbon:
As for the chat log reading: Aren’t there rules in everyone’s country about reading private chats and even storing them - keyword: data privacy? I know Germany has such rules - and even if you state to look at private chat logs - that’s forbidden and you are normally not allowed. Anyway probably that would distract from the topic^^ -
You surrender those rights when you register and use a product like a mod/server. What, you really think Google and Facebook aren’t mining your data?
A server is the private property of someone. The owner can do whatever the hell he/she wants, including banning people for swearing no matter whether he/she put up a rule about it. The only difference is in how big a fanbase the server will have once the owner starts banning people without due procedure.

i have to agree here. a permanent ban is a pretty hard form of punishment and cannot be declared in the rules just because to err is human while a rule usually should not open up the possibility of erring. a ban is an admin’s decision and the community trusts the admin to be a good admin and make usage of his rights and privileges only for the communities best. noone will mind if the admin makes sensible usage of his abilities, maybe some players will even like that the admin does so. but the admin has some freedom and that can not be shortened by players while his reputation can. anyway, you can dislike an admin for his decisions, but you can’t change anything about it. its up to the admin whether he wants his community to like him and to stay by him or to leave one after another.

I think it is time that people began to respect each other again.
There is too much free-flowing bad language everywhere and it has become accepted as normal, just like naked actors on TV, poofters and gays flaunting their ruining of a once nice word in our faces on TV and in person, and even being allowed to marry each other.
It is not normal and not acceptable, all of these are problems that erode society and family and respect.
Since those perpetrators do not respect others, there must in turn be some punishment as a deterrent.
So - let’s start with the bad language, and then we can move on to building gas chambers and giant ovens for the rest, including the law makers who gave their permissions for gay marriages… rofl

@ Huor
You’re right, there probably are but like FF says, you surrender all that when you join a privately run server when you agree to play by the rules that are up for the server. Hell (swearword for some), i even mention it in the rules that chatlogs are recorded for the benefit of everyone, especially in cases of verbal abuse. Why i don’t have a problem on the server, think last time i had to check them was about 2yrs ago when something like this came up.
Of course you always have the option of taking me to court in your country if you weren’t happy about the chatlog situation, but all i can say there is, good luck with that lol

Actually I prefer not to ban them, instead I hunt them. Nothing surpasses the satisfaction of pawning them, it doesn’t leave much time for them to run their mouth when they are running for their lives.

‘Cursing’ usually targets other players @ servers allowing PvP.
And that’s nothing, what should be tolerated imho.
From our rules:……
And as special bonus our ‘insult test’ 4 the simple minded:Go to the next pub and tell your stuff to the biggest guy there.
If he invites you to have a beer with him, it was no insult. And if you should think, getting shot is a reason or an excuse for bad behavior
- you missed a good part of the sense of a space combat game
- should get professional help.
And no, we are also not willing to accept that as your personal roleplay style.
If it was a minor insult, there might be set bounty by the admin team or prison or both or something like that
- otherwise the one is off.

Being Australian… I learn’t to curse before i could even talk properly… and have harnessed it into a fine tipped blade over the years to combat some very lame attempts at public nuisance… but this don’t mean i endorse open challenges in public chats… private… np, but when Mr’s 12yrld johnny badmouth’s mum see’s the filth there child is spewing via a chatlog… that’s punishment enough sometimes… but not always the case
Some evil doers are just like me… 30(ish) and still after repeated warnings fly 'round (or run… ) spewing obscenities like its there god given right… my Country is probably one of the worst for that… step into any Counterstrike server near AU and see… sheer filth really
So do we ban em? or try to change em… I suppose it really is a case by case basis… lets say we have a player straight from a FPS environment… saw Freelancer & starts playing… the 1st time he/she explodes… you can bet good money there going to cry “WTF”… in public channels… It’ll take a while for that person to break a nasty habit, as its what there used to when shooting things… some guidance as to the edicate of it all can solve that problem (most cases)
im with LS & F!R… It’s better to take a personal approach to nuisances by blasting them till they “get it” my personal solution (and others ive seen) is a “special” rep group that kills the fun for any evil doer (everything hates them) then hunt the fool and grind to dust… repeat…

It would depend on what the curse word/words where …. if you where to use light curse that was in a normal sentence then I should imagine it would be harsh to ban. If you where cursing at someone so to cause them some offence then the situation takes on a whole different guise. If it was malicious then you deserve a ban for cursing if its light casual/accidental then a ban would probably be over the top.
It’s very hard to place set in stone rules on things like this since each situation is unique. -
yea for my server admins will not only be a player rank but an intelligent NPC faction patroling most systems. so, a form of punishment would be the FLHook admin command setrep setting the player hostile with the otherwise neutral admin faction flying quite not the weakest ships. with the death penalty enabled and set high enough the players wouldn’t ignore attacks and the punishment is effective

It’s very hard to place set in stone rules on things like this since each situation is unique.Theres no souch thing as light curse! Even calling someone a noob or just saying “lol” on whatever he said may bring him to nastier words and maby even a fight.
I’m not resisting to cursing, because its fun to revange someone who insolted you. Also can bring up a grand fight, which will bring up battleships blowing up. In conclusion - A big action! -

F%&K that… them’s fightin words… 8-)
But seriously… if i get "lol"ed at (or i lol myself)… the last thing im expecting is an escalation in profanity… & besides my old mentor was & still is named n00bster… we all call him n00b… but not in that way…
Words are words… intentions are what matters, I myself can be the pinnacle of rude and abrupt… but still speak like a well trained manservant in the process, well i am a mercenary ingame… cant be all like… “oh excuse me… you seem to have a target hovering over your head there sir, please stand still whilst i shoot you” as that’s too much to type most days…
each server will have what it considers a breach of civility/moral and fairplay guidelines, i doubt there’s going to be any worldwide concensis here.

The same as example, for instance = for example
Why ban???
I often curse at my workplace.
Why I can’t curse in FL if there are reasons for that?
I hope there will be no such signs in space

Not a funny way at all, that is Riposte. Look back and you will see it is rare if at all that I start. But I will not lie down to be walked on

I started playing Freelancer a few years back a newbie who could not type in chat and was real bad at the game. I started at the DS9 server and was taught the right and wrongs there a zero tolerance on swearing,It has served me well over the few years i have played so i would have to say a zero tolerance of swearing is good for the community. May be on team speak within groups of adult players it would be tolerated but in chat online i do not think it is good for the game, due to the fact most players take offence to been cursed at in game it creates problems with clans / players /server police and admins who have to put up with it and deal with the problems of it…… My rant is over going to sneak back into the shadows were i belong
