High ping :(

Well, that connection bandwith is definitivly better, what did you ping at? EU or US?
But yeah, the problem is most likely the 3200 miles I guess. -

WHOAH. Are you telling me an 8mbps connection in Oman costs $260 per month?Jeez, and I thought my ISP were thieves. Well, they do have a monopoly in the country and charge $50 per month for 4mbps, but that’s nowhere near this.
We have worked Province about 3,000 people did it
internet was :

internet now : http://www.omantel.om/OmanWebLib/Individual/Internet/homebroadband.aspx?linkId=3&MenuId=420
now i am fun
my download speed 2 Mbps , it was 512 Kbps !

Yeah, that’s definitely better. Your ping should be good now, since I’ve been playing with a 2mbps connection for two years now.
As for hosting a server, I think a 3-4 man server should be able to run on that connection.

Mis-conception that “faster” connection = better ping. It may do, but it isn’t because of more bandwidth
Also, I think his UP-RATE will define how many his server can handle - which is no better than it wasA ping of 50+ms to a local server (under 50 miles) isn’t that good but far better than the 100ms he had before - which was terrible. However, they are snapshots and not averages - so who knows
Here are some distance variations for mine
UK (local, about 2 miles)
UK (Birmingham, so middle of UK) to Paris
UK to Turkey (1700 miles)
UK to Oman (~3000 miles)
(funnily enough better ping than to Turkey - but i did NOT repeat any tests to find averages ).UK To South Africa (~6000 miles)
UK to Australia (~10000 miles)
Forget the speeds achieved - look at the pings and distance

Yep, ping and upload speed are the two deciding factors, in that order. Unfortunately, ping has a very high chance of being determined by the overall infrastructure, which isn’t all that much dependent on the internet connection you have.
-
Totally correct.
The data (even if it is only a tiny “ping packet” ) is sent from your machine to the nearest router, from there to another router or maybe a server, from there to the next, from there to the next, and so on until it gets to the destination machine. And there is a pause for Name Server queries too along the way.
And then the “ping response” is sent back to your machine by the same path as before, or maybe another path.
If even one of those servers or routers is busy doing a lot of transfers/lookups, this will cause a delay.
Many think this transfer should be instantaneous - surprise surprise, technology is fast but not when everyone is banging away on facebook and Google and transferring masses of images and videos, as they do today. You only have to look at any website and see how many images are on every page, these have to be downloaded to your machine so they can be shown - everyone connected to your path is doing the same! lol

Thought i’d ping Oman to see what i get on my connection for $25 a monthAnother factor to consider in connections is your own pc, if it has trojans or anything else lurking in the background, it can really slow down your connection speed.
$25 a month? Holy heck, I’m moving
Mine costs about the same - however, I’d be looking at $40+ per month to get anything like your connection…and I don’t think I’ll ever get that up speed

Nort, I think you have still not understood what is causing the length of response times (pings). It is not in your control.
Tell us what you think makes the delay and we will try to inform you better.
