Should SW:WT v1.5 be the new FL SDK?
-
I love the SWWT mod and all the awesome work thats gone into its ongoing design… but that said my answer to the question posed at the thread start is HELL NO! … with all respects
Reason… SWWT is no SDK… its a fully realized mod with its own unique bells and whistles… kinda like making XLR or Flak88 an SDK… whilst SDK’s could be made for each of these mods… they’d resemble nothing of the original Freelancer format… and that’s what a SDK is meant to be… a stripped down bare basics workbench… In all honesty JFLP is a much better candidate as its basically the new SDK (or darn right should be) anyways…
I do see where your coming from though… SWWT is probably the best balanced mod there is out there, they keep a tight ship over there

@Hunterkiller, nice to see a familiar face n neverending complaints ;-D
@Xarian, wow does everyone still want to keep inventing the wheel over and over? Not me for sure (its not stealing when you credit people!?)

Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me either. Fantastic mod, looks beautiful, plays great, but it wouldn’t be a very special mod if everyone started using it as the base for their own mod.
I’ve noticed numerous requests for use of their starspheres and nebulas in the last couple of years which have all been turned down whether credits would have been given or not, and to me that makes sense for any mod that would be made publicly available.
If they were to give up on running a server and stop development of the mod then maybe I could understand it, but that’s not the case.
The only way I could perhaps understand it is if you were to make a mod called SWWT:something, so that it’s clear that it’s SWWT but a different take on it.

@rasauul, good to see that you’re still around even though I haven’t seen you on FLC of late.
No offense but;
There’s no reason to try and redo or, outdo something that has already been done right the first time. I play on the SW server and the mod is great, just like it is. It’s up to Foresaken and his crew to decide if something better should become of it.Sorry, but that’s how I see it with that mod.

It’s already used minimum at two mods: especially star spheres
But in other side when you do something from scratch - you will grow -
Should it be the new FL sdk?
Clear answer: No, because it simply isnt a sdk for FL. Its a mod.
If you go this way to call it the FL sdk you would be somewhat unfair towards all the other mods which certainly have the same type of quality.
Discovery, Freeworlds, Nightstalkers universe, TNG, Crossfire, Flak88…etc… all of a sudden all these mods could in theory be considered a FL sdk. That only causes troubles and confusion (for players and developers).FL has a SDK already… SW:WT is a mod just like all the others.
If you want to continue modding it or building something on top of it then I wish you all the best with your project and ideas.
However, your first step should be to ask the original developers for permission and also make sure that they get all due credits for their hard work so far. -
I’ve already contacted Forsaken about this and have yet to get a reply. I’m sure he’ll be here to look into it before too long.

The ‘readme’ should have his contact info in the mod files and if you can’t find him there, try Steam if you have a Steam account.
