[The Starport News]Acquisition of an old domain
-
So you’ve heard reasons, but I dont necessarily agree they are the primary reasons why we wanted to secure the TLR.com domain and not have it direct to TLR.org:
I think the primary reason for doing so is that users coming to TLR.org get a filtered view on the Freelancer community. Not only is TLR.org heavily biased towards Swat/Crossfire, it also actually censors our site. I can also name a lot of other reasons but they would be more on a personal level.
Now, I think that with TLR.com being with us, we can give old returning as well as new visitors a very open minded view on the FL community. The richly filled community bar links to almost any FL site, and the news are the latest in Freelancer development. I’d hate seeing all these users lost to a community that is run by a person that thinks we want to destroy FL.
-
Indeed. People can arrive on the TLR.com landing page and go anywhere from there. It’s their decision. They can go to TLR.org if they want, or FLC, or here, or Discovery, or SWAT-Portal or anywhere really. It gives them the choice and lets them know the community is widespread and still very much alive. We don’t censor site names on bullshit accusations - I thought we’d went past this after the AzzA days.
TLR.org is free to continue to exist as they already were. To them, nothing has changed. I can also guarantee you that we won’t try to transform TSP in TLR.com or something; the domain will remain a gateway to access the rest of the community and the archives. To find answers, friends, and servers.
-
So pure, untainted, and equal function for all - even better than I thought and sounding about as fair as it can be
So Lancersreactor.com won’t be “the centre of the Freelancer universe” - which seemed to annoy people with the really old version of it (and I assume people thought it would try to be again), and it won’t have direct community of it’s own to get embroiled in issues either.
It will simply be a landing and linking place for all Freelancer communities, providing a centralised repository and news location.
Link to ModDB too?

I am aware of the “legendary” conflict between TSP and TLR and from my point of view this is intended to be a hit to the current TLR portal (at least half of the intention is to hit TLR). But again, It is not normal to have 2 TLR on the web. Imagine if the TSP had a clone with .org or whatever domain it could be, think about how the community would’ve felt when they see the clone created. All their work, all their efforts and so on. Just give it a picture. On a second note, about TLR.org activity. I need to say the contrary and not that I am part of TLR, but I daily watch it’s activity on the forums, registered members (again daily registered members), and even the gallery which is very up-to-date as well and should I say that TLR is working on it’s official mod ?. In my opinion OP tries very hard to maintain 2 very big FL networks which share a huge amount of resources for modding, and his job is being kept difficult because of some issues that happened long time ago. I respect you for what you achieved here, I really missed the old domain, since it was for me the source where I heard for the first time the word “mod” for a game. And think of the work put into the current TLR, I don’t want to create inflammatory topics because I know as I said before, the eternal conflict… and well no side want’s to make steps to a close collaboration.

Read this thread and i do not post as much as other Freelancer followers. If any “forum” aquires something good for Freelancer to improve Freelancer then what is the problem ? The problem is always the same posters saying there is hidden agendas stealing other posters and members of communitys. “HELLO” posters jump from community to community to gather information and expand there playing/ modding experience. I am a player not a modder or anything else just a player every step forward within the community is always followed with distrust and arguments “Grow Up” we are going forward not backwards. I will now depart to the just reading and enjoying learning about everything i can i suggest everyone can do the same.
(PS) Is there is a secret Starport mod in the pipeline sign me up

We dont create “official” Starport mods because that would get us in trouble sooner or later. Everybody gets the same support over here, no matter if you’re official or not.
No offense, but I’ve seen a big PR machinery behind Continuum largely done by Op. Now, apart from station models the mod doesnt have a lot to show for, however Op talks about it as if it already surpassed many “standard” mods (which are not “officially” supported).
If you think this all fine - ok. I guess then we are just having a different mentality over here.
Back to topic, I want to re-iterate: TLR.com will be nothing put a portal to Freelancer community sites. We wont build another TLR community because that would be silly.

At least the intentions with the old domain are good. Because as I said and you’ve got my point, having 2 different domains doing the same job would look stupid. And regarding Continuum, OP put a hand to boost the mod. That isn’t a good thing ? PR is a good way to make your place into the big “arena” of the other mods. And when the PR is good the mod has bigger chances. And since Continuum is on a continuous development, thus it’s been shown the progress, doesn’t really matter if it’s done daily or monthly. And really there is no problem in having an official mod for each community from my perspective. Bigger communities, greater mods because of their resources and support. But that’s another topic do discuss about. Anyway I’m looking forward to see how the old domain will go further on. Good luck with it.

Make sure to browse around here as well because otherwise you might miss some rather nice tools (i.e. the latest UTF editor).
Oh, and even if we dont agree with TLR’s way, you’re of course free to post news about Continuum! -

I’ve edited to remove my post - so people don’t dwell on my opinion but instead w0dka/FF’s post - which is what matters.
I don’t see how .org can see .com as a threat, or competition. The way they’ve said it is going to be sounds ultimately fair, reasonable, and decent. By that I mean the purpose of .org is it’s own site (as most fl sites). The purpose of .com is anything but it’s own site. I hope those with a different opinion may see that in the future and therefore stop worrying

Yep, as the third Admin here, and as FF and W0dk4 already iterated, we intend to use TLR.com for the good of the entire FL community regardless of beliefs or biases against mods/modders, etc.
If you want to post news, post it. If it doesn’t go up within a day, PM us. We will make this work for you guys and not the other way around.
As for news, any news is good news. If your server is throwing an event, post it here. If your server is celebrating, post it here. Use TLR.com as a greater stage for you to get information about your mod out.
Also, thank you everyone for the well wishes with this new endeavor.

I am sure the old domain will be put in good use and rather ease the job of many modders around the FL communities, and well for the future of FL modding also. On a side note, I am not really interested into the many differences between these “sides”, because keeping an old game like FL active even today it’s … something ! And with these separations and arguments to each others brings no good not for the several individuals but for the entire FL community around the web. And I need to be honest that I am rather new to modding as this is my first experience as a 3D Modeller, and to be new to this whole new experience is really “hurting” to see people “under the same roof” arguing about … nonsense :D.
-
Yep, agreed, Dave.
As a sidenote, I’ve seen some of your models and they look super promising! We have a model showroom that you’re more than welcome to post them in if you wish. It’s a great place to whet people’s appetite for pretty FL things.

I hope you find resources that are useful, but as always, just ask away if you can’t, need help - or just want to thoughts, advice, or the sound of chatter
As for the fall outs - it is mostly differences in personal opinions - how things are perceived and thought of - or jumping to conclusions about implications. Take things with a pinch of salt and form your own opinions based on evidence and you’ll be fine.
I’d just point out that here allows (within reason of taste!) anything to be discussed - which is why it often is incorrectly copping flak (in my opinion) as this evidently isn’t for everyone’s taste
Have fun

I have a question. Probably it has been answered somewhere already but when you say that you use the lancersreactor.com domain for the benefit of ALL freelancers and their communities then why is it only linking to Starport and not to ALL of them?
Or was that just a slogan?
Right now I see no way that any other Freelancer community can take a benefit from it. Why don’t you fill your statement with truth by adding links to all the Freelancer communities? Maybe this would even calm down the situation between the sites.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt that this was a genuine mistake. On every single page at TSP we have the Freelancer Community Network where all servers, mods and clan are linked. This is also included on lancersreactor.com and far from “just a slogan”.
I took a screenshot for you in case you were unable to find it.
It takes one click to get that overlay to drop down.
And just to answer any other questions about the Freelancer Community Network, OP told us to remove SWAT from the site. So, that was his choice, not ours.
As for other ways modders can link their site from TLR.com, just put it in the news articles. We don’t ban communities extensions.
-
That is an explanation but no real answer.
Ok there is this community bar and I can also understand why there are no links to lancersreactor.org or swat-portal.com.Those sites use a different community bar as they can not use yours, as from what I have understand your community bar does not fit the requirements of a site that supports more than one game. Since links on your bar are not allowed as long the other site does not host that bar itself these two communities are not allowed to join. The conclusion of that is that these communities do not even have the chance to be listed there.
Furthermore I have to ask myself why all other communities are hidden behind such a bar when Starport is able to put numerous links right at the top of the site. I also could link to all other sites by putting up a site with black fonts and black background and the only visible link would point to my own site.
I am sorry but in my eyes as long nothing changes this slogan is not true and the “cake is a lie”.
