High Resolution Textures
-
I would suggest to play the game before you mod it. The campaign is great and, for a few mods, it is used as base for their own stories. It also gives you a good overview about most systems since nearly all mods keep them.
The StarWars mod is still in developement (http://freeworldstidesofwar.com/).
High resolution textures aren’t full available. There is already a nice collection of better star backgrounds, but for ships or stations there are probably no mods, and if, they don’t cover everything.

You can open the HD Textures pack with a normal extracting program like WinRar or 7zip. Unpack the “DATA” folder into your “\Freelancer\DATA” folder and tell it to overwrite everything. You could also install the Freelancer Mod Manager to install it.
To install the HD starspheres, also open it and do the same. There are also different coloured interfaces available, you just have to put them into the right folders, if you want to change the default blue one.

You can of course pick some other player up and explore the universe or do missions if you are in one group. Something like playing the campaign in multiplayer isn’t possible.
Everything you do is on your own server/the server you play. If you open an auction house there, you can do it.
Freelancer is no MMORPG, its all about the single server. -
Sorry for selfpromotion, but maybe you will try this one.

Maybe I’m delusional here but I do remember a certain HD texture pack by Radiant that covered a majority if not all stations, starships, docking rings and jumpgates, asteroids, nebula sprites and planet surfaces…

Just for correctness: Thats the one I posted, I just used the Moddb page.
