Just bought 2 copies of some sort of Freelancer beta

Cool, but is it actually a beta version ingame? Is anything different?
/oh I guess its this:

I’d love to see what’s on those discs.

Ok, so having installed both there is a bit of difference between the two disks. The one with more color is a bit older than the other one.
Unfortunately, I cannot get either to run correctly. The newer one crashes during the intro cinematic and the older one’s CD check fails. (I suspect it has something to do with running Windows 7 but I’m not 100%)
Also, I’d be fine with making an image of both to see if you guys could figure it out, I’d love to see what’s different.

So far I can see that it uses a different icon to the retail version. Judging by the dates it could be the version of Freelancer seen in the E3 2002 trailer, which has some differences like the Chancellor having a different head. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkdrdbrkokc

After doing a bit of research and looking at the readme files, I can safely assume it is part of the beta that was mentioned in this interview. Looks like the two CDs are from both stages of that. Still no luck getting it to run

Did you delete My Documents/My Games/Freelancer/Accts? That could be causing the crash. If that fails, you could try this:
-Make a new, separate folder.
-Copy EXE and DLLs from a regular retail 1.0 FL install to the new folder.
-Copy the DATA folder from one of the Betas to the new folder.
-Clear the accts folder and then try running FL.This could allow you to access the beta using the more stable 1.0 exe and dll files. Or it might crash because of differences between the beta and retail.
EDIT: Comparisons with the vanilla retail 1.0 exe:
Size - 2.86 MB
Version - 1.0.1223.11 / 1, 0, 0, 0
Modified - 04 February 2003, 20:04 -
Wow, this is so cool !! It’s like a treasure hunt where we discover long forgotten artifacts

Yeah, it would be awesome to have an image of the beta versions, for lost content and maybe lost functionality.
Do you have a reasonably fast internet connection to upload it somewhere?
I could give you an ftp account or you can directly upload to our download database and we’ll see about how to share with interested folks to keep it legal (i.e. senior area). -
I have made an image of the older version, however I am having some terrible issues getting .1022 working. The disk itself looks fine, so I dont really know the issue is. I can install it seemingly fine so perhaps I could just rar that up so you guys could see what’s in that.

I may help you to run disks by teamviewer

I must say I’m fascinated!
As far as I can imagine it, there should be difference between this beta’s engine (the 2001 version most likely) and the engine we see now (not less, but more features in the beta), if this beta really is what I think it is.
Share a link once you upload it!
