Lag Spikes - Server and Client on same machine
-
Greetings, The Starport!
Cutting directly to the chase, the title says it all - I experience bad lag spikes from time to time when playing Freelancer on my own server.
This is a question that seems to have been discussed before on this thread - I thought I’d create a new one and link the original post as it’s years old.
Some background information:
- I’m running Windows 10, everything works perfectly fine (except for… this problem)
- I’m running Freelancer with the Discovery mod (currently v4.86)
- I’ve made a few HudShift adjustments because I’m playing @ 1920x1080
More details on the problem:
I get small freezes every now and then that seem completely unrelated to any in-game event or situation.
It’s not when approaching planets, not when jumping, not when there are many enemies on-screen.
It just happens, randomly, and is quite disruptive (sometimes I miss the killing shot because of it, sometimes it just messes up my firing rotation, sometimes it’s just enough to take those extra hits to put me in trouble). So… is there any update on why this happens, or what exactly causes it, maybe some creepy registry-editing workaround for it?
I have no extra computer around to use as dedicated server, so I’d really appreciate some alternative to it.
Thank you all in advance!

A commonly overlooked culprit is a program running in the background, especially one that uses your internet connection.
You could also try unplugging your modem and router for a few minutes and then plugging them back in to clear them out and refresh them.

I’ve tried resetting my internect connection and all, I’ve tried running only the server and client after just bringing the system up.
It was after giving up on the “it’s my internet’s fault” theory that I came across that other thread (and similar results on google), it’s something with the server+client thing.
Besides, if it’s any good, all my friends play smoothly and lagless while I’m the only one having these lag moments, ironically.

This has always been an issue with Freelancer when the server and client are on the same machine and has never been resolved. I don’t know of a single person who doesn’t have it.
-
Hmmm… I’ve always run the server on a separate box so I’ve never noticed that problem. First I heard.
(game’s 13 years old and I’m still learning new stuff about it)

You don’t need much machine to run a local server with only one or two players logging in. If you have an extra laptop running around connect that to your router and run the server off that.
LAN connection is much better than WiFi connect.
