Cloaking

over in freeworlds we have been discussing cloaking due to the release of news about RL metamaterail that is truly transparent glass.
one of the ideas that was set forth is to make cloaking a highly penalized event.
starkill posted that if it was some way linked to huge power consumtion, the inability to shoot while cloaked, and a huge and constant shield drain that it may be an interesting concept. that would keep people from using it unfairly.
any thoughts?

I was always curious if there was a way to mount a power-draining cloaking device as a shield slot, instead. Or even make a ship that doesn’t HAVE a shield slot, but the cloaking device instead. That way, cloaking vessels would lose a tremendous amount of defense. A slow power-drain would remove the possibility of them cloaking indefinitely, as well.
I do not know, however, if you can mount a cloaking device in the shield slot…

Well if people want to be really loyal to the Freelancer storyline, a cloaking device should consume as much power as 10 battleship power plants - according to a rumour in the game, anyways. Taking that into consideration, a cloak would deplete a fighter’s power supply in no time. The fighters seen during the singleplayer campaign were using nomad power supplies to allow that to happen (consider they were all Rheinland fighters, and as for the Osiris, it should be obvious it is running on some inhuman “fuel”:p ) - that is why I can’t understand mods that implement cloaking. It doesn’t fit the story.
But that is the story part of the thing, as for the technical part:

We implemented player cloaking in WTS 4.17 after some discussions in the admin team:

we use w0dk4’s cloak stuff together with M0tah’s FLHook 1.60.

our oid admin cloak (the same stuff the cheater used) doesn’t work anymore

i wasn’t able to get the cloak 2 drain energy

our cloakable ships are striped down in weapons, shield, speed

it’s a nice feature and the players like it and i won’t miss it
ATM i m uploading a file (“cloak.zip”)which should include all stuff,
which is needed, 2 implement some cloakable ships
in a mod (2 the coding section).
It’s not tested, i m a bit low on time atm and i m great in creating bugs.
So take care, if you make use of it.PS. i also wasn’t able 2 mount the stuff in a shield slot.
