How to turn
-
When in PvP you need to have very quick turns, if you are sluggish in your turns, you will die.
I use a combination of things to turn, my turn sequence is this.
As you pass someone, and I mean as you see your opponents wings of his ship going by you, you begin your turn. Turning in the direction of your mouse is important. If you are turning right, point your mouse to the right and I mean all the way over to the right, top or bottom of your screen, it will make you turn quicker, thats the first thing.
Next is reverse tapping reverse will automatically spin your ship around, I sometimes use a bit of dead stop before my reverse.
Strafing in the opposite direction of your turn, will make your ship snap on your turn, and that is basically what you want to do, quick turns means you have another 3 seconds to hit your opponent. Strafing in the opposite direction is pretty easy, if you are turning right, you strafe left or vice versa.
You will find the best way to accomplish turns is to use a stationary object. Like a planet or station to practice on.
Remember turns are very very important, if you have bad turns, you will die:)
And again, practice makes perfect.

The other popular method is using engine-kill. If you’re using a german keyboard I suggest you re-bind the button (I personally have it on ‘Q’), the standard button is ‘Z’ afaik.
Basically, the concept behind enginekill is that your flightpath won’t change (if you fly “north” your ship will still move north), but you can look into another direction. This is useful, as it gives you more distance to the opponent. To do that, just fly, hit your enginekill once (it’s a toggle-button), and start moving your nose around. You’ll see that your speed decreases and eventually goes into the negatives as well. If you hit your enginekill-button again, or use any other speed-impairing command like afterburner, reverse thrust, accelerate/decelerate etc, the effect will be aborted.

I usually have my W key set to afterburner, and S set to reverse thrust A and D set to left and right strafes respectively.
My turning style is quite quick, heres how I do it:
As I’m passing an enemy if I’m turning left, I will hit engine kill and when I have turned 50% around I hit reverse thrust and right strafe, then when 75% hit left strafe and all the while turning with mouse.
Sounds complicated but it does get you turned around pretty fast.
But the key to good turning is controlling your distance and speed effectively which a lot of players fail at / make mistakes doing
