The Deal With Nomads
-
I don’t know if it’s just me, but recently I’ve realised that many of the big mods focus around Nomads, Nomads Returning, or a similar theme. I would say I don’t have a problem with this, but I do. We’ve had nomad mods pretty much since FL came out in 03’ Fine, someone made one at the start, but when you get to the 30th, it starts to get a little old.
Seriously, I don’t get the fascination with them. They were thrown in early by Digital Anvil to end the plot quickly. Why can’t we have a ‘Human only’ universe? It feels realistic, cleaner and more polished, at least in my mind. Has anyone read Vatta’s War? Anyone get the feel for that? Cause it’s a helluva lot better than most sci fis with aliens in.
Ok, there is a (half decent) backstory for Nomads up on the net, but the way they’ve been presented in Freelancer and mods is just plain wrong. It’s the same every time! Nomads return, Humans fight them. I mean, it’s barely ever thought through, and is presented in the most ridiculously colourful and childish way. Has anyone here heard of professionalism?
Can I please see a mod where the Nomads don’t return, fight, or even feature?
Am I the only person with this issue?
Seriously, every time some Illiterate 12 year old posts his latest Nomad Return Tm mod up, I die a little inside. -
Nope u’re not the only person with that issue.
I also had enough of nomads, therefor i did not expand their space or add new ships to them or made Nomad BS encounters.
In NU they’re still in the unknown system but thats it, we have Ori’s and Wraith, or Sith’s and soon we will have other bad boys.I did never understand why anyone likes the nomads so much.

Wasn’t it black eagles mod that started all that off?
Well I know MU is centered around the nomads returning. -
I feel like there’s some sort of trend lately that goes the other way around and deals away with the Nomads. It makes for more originality, I believe, although punching some Nomads in the face can sometimes be gratifying. ;D

actually the freelancer story was supposed to be much deeper. if you look at the cinematics (the full opening cinematics) theres supposed to be this enemy back in the SOL system, and they are eventually gonna find the freelancer universe. i always wondered why nobody ever made a mod with that story in mind. the colonists moved to escape a threat, found a new one, then got rid of that, then…the old enemy returns. thats how it was supposed to go, but i think M$ decided to chop the franchise short for some reason. they could have come out with a sequel very easily.

The So called ‘Full’ Cinematics are not canon. They’re essentially a concept that wasn’t used. My point was, if people want to include the nomads, do somthing original. Have them come back subtly or whatever, or just give them a cameo role.
It’s the mods that have a terrible/no explanation as to why they’re all over the place that bothers me.
In fact, they bother me in Vanilla, take em’ out.
If someone could redo the plot from Tegaki’s arch, where Tegaki is not a nomad, and the order does not come to light, I would marry them, no questions asked. -
Have to agree the Nomad thing has been overdone. I even took it a little far in the Shrouded Worlds mod at NiMa but I had a long term storyline in mind. Pity the server died a death.
The idea I had was to bring in a new alien race which exterminates all Nomads, in the process laying waste to most of the systems in Sirius, humankind with it. Also DomKavosh return to have their say in the matter when their lapdog’s take a beating and get stuck into a new intertellar war. All the time humankind trying to survive the onslaught.
