FL Promotion Thread

Yeah, but one thing I fear that the posting might get too long if I include more mods? (I am going to do so though, but just a thought.)
And I have to find a better title I believe ^^ -
As i said before if you cant include all mods then dont include any. I see this as a very biased approach.

Totally agree.

You can find everything you want to know about Itano Circus at the moddb page here. Info, screens, video.

Be sure to include this screenshot, as it is sort of the title card for IC.

Hey, at least Frank doesn’t waste any time in getting his mod info up. applaudes
No but really, while I tend to agree with statements like Dragonite’s “if you can’t fit 'em all don’t fit any”, ads like this need fine mod examples to help convey the point - so why not just submit stuff on your mod for Bas to put on there? That pretty much solves the “bias” issue; has modding competition really gotten to the point where mods can’t be advertised to the non-Freelancer public?
Also, for feedback:
Perhaps remove the specific Autobuy, credit transfers, player cloaking, player docking, and webinterfaces mentions. They take up room for things that are becoming pretty standard, and are mentioned in the mod descriptions themselves. I think people tend to care more about the end-product mod anyways, so this would free up more space to display mods without getting crowded. For the mods in the ad, I think Freeworlds is a good choice. It’s a polished project centered around a universe everyone loves, so that alone is bound to throw some interest back into Freelancer. As for Flak, to be honest I was a bit surprised to see it here, as it’s a rather radical mod, but I guess it’s good to cover the spectrum; I certainly shouldn’t complain. =P
I think a few more mods - especially familiar ones - would be good for grabbing back old players. Seeing new mods mixed with the old ones would probably give an old vet plenty of reason to at least check the community out again.

Don’t worry, I will add some other mods later.

What exactly gives you or anybody else the right to sit there and type that one mod is better than another or one is more polished or one is a bit radical. Those are your opinions and everyone has a different opinion. MU has been around for 5 years and has seen thousands of players walk through its doors. So what gives you the right to say it doesnt belong in an ad for the game.
Its this kind of stupid mentality that got the FL Community into this situation in the first place. Too many idiots with huge egos who dont share and believe their mods are the best thing since sliced bread.
I dont claim to have the best mod around because i know damned well their are better ones but i do claim that MU is totally unbiased and if it were us making such an ad then we would either inclue all of the mods or not mention any of them.
Also if i am asked to share something or asked for help then i do it and i do it in a way where i am not putting someone down because they are trying to learn how to do something.
Im also not scared to advertise other mods within my mod and am doing so right now for the Underverse mod. Its just a shame that so many other people are incapable of doing the same thing without some petty flame war breaking out.
Thats all i have to say on the matter and if anyone doesnt like my opinion then you know where my inbox is

Dragnite,
I just want to include quite different mods and such which will attract new and/or old players. That has no thing to do with which mods is better, I for instance also won’t add 2 SW-TC mods there, because one is enough. And I have to get a very compressed post, other wise I really would in clude (all most) every mod out there.
But I have “lack of space”.
(This is not meant offensive in any way) -
…… oh what …
… no WTS in the announcement…
… you can’t do that …
… atleast you also have to remove all other mods …[–->SARCASM OFF<—]
I think it’s obvious, that such an announcement can’t include all the Freelancer mods
and
I think BAS did choose 2 very nice and especially very different mods
(what doesn’t mean your mods - or WTS - are worse),
Those examples will help to show interested players, what’s possible with FL today.
And i m furthermore convinced, that it’s better to
have one or two mods in a kind of showcase, than nothing. And readin’ some of those statements above,
i m really glad he didn’t choose WTS 4 that.
So PLEASE stop bitching around and discouraging him.
Every new FL player he attracts with that,
might sooner or later try your mod, even if it isn’t named now.BAS does PR work 4 us all and we get it 4 free.
That earns respect imho - nothing else. -

I’m sorry that you took my post that way; I didn’t mean any offense. I never said that any mod did or did not belong in an ad; I think Monkey Universe, as well as many of the other older projects, would be great to display here to show any old vets who used to play the mod how many steps forward your project has taken since they left - potentially drawing them back in. When I claimed Flak was “a rather radical mod”, I meant it in the sense that it takes enormous departures from standard Freelancer gameplay mechanics, which is something that is a huge turn-off to many FL vets - which is why I was surprised to see it in an ad appealing to old players. I never meant to place Flak above or below any other mod with that statement.
Its this kind of stupid mentality that got the FL Community into this situation in the first place. Too many idiots with huge egos who dont share and believe their mods are the best thing since sliced bread.
While I really don’t want to add fuel to the fire, I feel this is a fair point to make: every aspect of Flak is openly developed. I have written tutorials for major aspects of the mod, and everything M0tah has written for the mod is 100% open source. All of the graphical upgrades written by Why485 for both Flak and Itano Circus are freely available as well. Numerous other projects have also adopted this open philosophy, and while I’m aware some projects maintain a “closed development” stance, they are fully entitled to do so, so please refrain from calling them idiots.
Now, a little more on topic, Why485 pointed out to me that Procyon may be worthy of mention - http://procyonserver.com/index.php?page=procyonhook - they’ve done some pretty unique work, and should be appealing to the older vets fond of vanilla FL, but looking for a little spice.
-
OMG the drama. Seriously, when you want your mod mentioned, why dont you go ahead and make your own FL promotion post?
I think you can never find the “right” balance with the mod mentions, but hell no, it would be fatal not mentioning any mods because that is Freelancers biggest sell-point.
-
I’m cool with replacing FW:ToW with another mod. Makes no difference to me, either way. Everyone’s mod has a right to be up there. So if the community wants it, replace FW:ToW with something different. There is no reason to get all angry about it.
As for this comment:
Its this kind of stupid mentality that got the FL Community into this situation in the first place. Too many idiots with huge egos who dont share and believe their mods are the best thing since sliced bread.
While I do see this in some mods, not all of them are like this. Some great community work has been some by some modders, so please realize that. I also think you’re taking what Bas did way too seriously. But, that’s just my opinion. As I said in my above paragraph, if you’re really upset about this, I’m totally cool with MU taking FW:ToW spot there.
-
Not really upset about it its more of a case of everytime i read one of these promotion threads its always the bigger mods included in it and the smaller ones are forgotten which leaves the biggers mods with all the players and mods like MU to struggle. Mind you we always have struggled although at times we have had a high population.
I just think there is too much biased involved in projects like this one, id much rather have seen a list of all the mods put into a poll and voted on for which should be involved and the top 10 or 20 included in the ad. If that had happened i wouldnt be sitting here typing this now.
So PLEASE stop bitching around and discouraging him.
Guess you didnt like my opinion……shame
-
Thing is: there needs to be a selection of mods to show. People want screenies and shiny stuff, not a list of things and huge blocks of text that do their best to avoid mentioning any mod.
I know the big mods get more advertising, as is usual. Having taken part in a lot of mod projects, I can tell you I know the feeling. What I do know however is that:
- If we do nothing, the player base does not grow.
- If we do something, maybe the big servers will benefit the most initially, but there’s a good possibility those new people will branch out after a while looking for new interesting places.
- We can’t possibly list all existing mods in FL.
With this in mind, I’d say it’d be a shame NOT to do something, even if it doesn’t include all mods. A line has to be drawn somewhere, and I’d say it would be best to keep it relatively small.
@Drags: I hope you realize that in a poll, the most POPULAR mods would get the favor. Not necessarily the best, not necessarily the most developed or the most innovative mod; only the ones which have gathered the highest amounts of people: the big mods you are complaining get all the new players. Making a poll would actually be a surefire way to restrict this whole process to only (very) large mods.
-
Why can’t there be an extensive list of mods to accompany the promotion? I strongly agree with keeping the main promotion short to catch people’s attention but then if they’re interested give them a link to some more. In this case a list of mods. Keep the list simple, a name, a small image, a description in 500 characters, and a link to a promotional page for the mod, all supplied by the mod’s developer(s) of course.
That’s the sort of thing that would draw me in. Once something like this catches my eye I’ll happy spend some time browsing through a fairly long list relating to it, even more so if there is some images or colour to break it up.

I think I will simply add the link to mod db:
