Graphics lag?
-
That really sounds like a configuration issue with the nVidia control panel. I know for a while I was forcing antialiasing on FL and it’d lag like crazy when the camera was traversing semi-transparent effects (I have a 8800 GTX, for reference).
-
Just a couple of thoughts for you -
-
is your hard disk one big lotsa-gigs C drive with lots of files on it? Should be partitioned, you don’t want more than 20GB for your C disk, and keep only Windows stuff on it. Install progs on D or E or F etc and keep your data files on any except C. This is because when you have only 1 partition with 200,000 files on it they are all in the root! The librarian (cpu) has to scan all to get the one he wants, and then keep on doing it for the next etc.
-
screen resolution?
-
low space on C drive (you can move your paging file to another partition and you should do that).
-
antivirus - Symantec is the worst for slowing down a PC; AVG is better but still makes it splutter now and then by the time it passes a requested file to the prog, Avira I heard is better but haven’t tried it - but it’s the realtime file protection in all of these that kills performance. Disable whichever you have for a quick trial to see.
-
get a copy of jkdefrag and run that and see what happens.
-
my machine is a single-core 3.6GHz and has a built-in graphics adapter and was extremely similar to what you describe. :-[
… last month I put in an old nVidia 5700 with 64MB ram on it and it runs like water flowing fast in a bubbling brook now! ;D

@FF: That sounds similar to my problem but I’m not 100%. I notice slowdowns when I pan over SWWT’s jump holes and most nebulas, in addition to when I’m spinning and there’s a lot of fire coming at/from me.
@ST: Yes my hdd is just the one partition, although at the moment there’s virtually nothing on the thing and probably never will be as I can’t imagine needing 1TB of space. Even my old 160GB hdd never filled to capacity. I’ve never fooled around with partitions before and so would be in the dark as to how to create them. I’m guessing there are programs that can help me with this?
I’ve tried the game at all resolutions but on my old box (AMD 3200+ single core with 128MB GPU) I ran the game on 1600x1200x32 with all options on with no issues so that’s what I’ve been attempting.
Dear Bob no ;D I’ve got like 900GB free on this monstrosity.
I use AVG 8.5, although I don’t have it turned on while I play so it’s a non-issue.
I have no idea what that is but I’ll give it a shot I guess.

Many A/V programs don’t completely deactivate themselves even if they are turned “off”. I’d suggest you try uninstalling it and try it out if you can’t find any other solution.
-
Do what you will mate, I’m just saying antivirus software is usually tricky. I heard some behave nearly like rootkits and as such don’t need to have processes running to interfere with the system. Uninstalling probably won’t help, but I always say: don’t ignore an option just because you think it’s not it.
-
OK, recently FF’s latest FL Developer was taking several minutes to load the .dll files, which he thinks it might be because he made this version multi-threading to take advantage of dual-core machines - mine has only 1 and I got this awful slow-down whereas the previous version loaded the same .dlls in a jiffy.
Is there a way to disable the dual-core temporarily for FL to check?
Just shooting in the dark here.
-
I’d just make sure your graphics drivers aren’t forcing options, if it has a control ox, like the CCC for ATI, you can disable them completely, and the drivers still work the same. But you don’t get annoying forced settings.
-
The control panel has been set to all off before, although some of those options are forced off and I’m not sure what FL does and does not support graphics wise. Most of the features are either force on/off or application controlled. Setting to app controlled nets me nothing although there is an option in the panel to enable multi-threading for older games so in theory the .dll thing shouldn’t be an issue, but with FL who knows.

It could just be a simple case of FL not recognising your card, if it’s specifications aren’t listed in the “flconfigdatabase.txt” then there’s every chance you’ll have graphics problems.
Louva (EOA) updated this file by adding more modern cards to it.
-
Oh, Been there before,
1st, Cross fingers and await next version of nForce Drivers as it might suddenly fix the problem.
2nd, If your using “tweeked” drivers from card maker, you might want to try the NVIDIA reference drivers for that card instead.
3rd, Unlikely but have seen it happen, make certain that your card, if it has multiple outputs and one is Composite, SVGA, or even a HDMI, is not running in Dual Mode (Or what ever your card maker calls it). A lot of cards act like yours when trying to stay in “TV Output Compatible Mode” at odd resolutions and color settings.
Well I figured I’d post something in here just to clear it up and in case anyone else happens to have the same card. The GeForce 9400 is one of those cards that FL simply doesn’t like so avoid it like the plauge ;D
-
So digdug - is it a case of it just doesn’t like your card?
Was it solved by using another card?
-
I run a core i3 with a GT630 from Nvidia and I get a whopping 1fps…. I contacted Nvidia and they keep telling me it’s the game and not their card. The game ran perfect before the card was installed so screw them. I just want to find a fix for this damn issue so I can get back on FLU and continue my Admin duties.
-
If you already had freelancer installed before you changed graphics card, then I would try uninstalling FL fully and then reinstall, many games have to be reinstalled when you change cards.
Failing that, remove the video card and try playing with your i3’s onboard graphics, or disable your i3’s onboard graphics in the bios so you only have the 630 working. It’s not the video card that’s causing you grief, it’s your system setup in one form or another.
-
Already re-installed. It’s a no-go.
And as to the BiOS…… No can do… I run Windows 8.1, meaning the BiOS, or any alternative for it, doesn’t exhist anymore. I have set my system up in so many ways and have still failed to solve this issue. All drivers are up to date, including some beta drivers that I was given by Nvidia to try and solve the issue. Since BiOS doesn’t exhist anymore Windows has another means of selecting which gfx card to run, and yes, I have tried running 630 alone AND the motherboard card alone. Nothing…
-
Well I’m still running win7 and I don’t use bios either, it’s called UEFI nowadays but I still refer to it as bios all the same, old habits.
How to access UEFI on win8 -
that link shows you how to access UEFI on win8, yes. But, all win8 users were forced to upgrade to 8.1. In 8.1 they made it impossible to access the UEFI. They did this intentionally but the reason is beyond me. So, again, BiOS or any alternative (meaning UEFI) does not exhist on 8.1. Atleast as far as it’s users are concerned.
-
Well that sucks, it’s not hard to see why so many people say win8 is shite. I’ve no experience using it so not sure what else to suggest, can you roll back to win8 and access UEFI, or better still maybe install win7 if you have a copy hanging about. If all fails, there’s plenty other good games to play in this world so it’s not the end of the world is it
