GE Storm Test

Sorry that I just wrote my opinion for this project so far. It seems to be forbidden to criticize something.
Maybe at any time, when the project is done, I will praise LS for his work, but not now. -

Maybe at any time, when the project is done, I will praise LS for his work, but not now.Do you think that is too late to praising? I believe the praise should be give then it’s at difficult time to keep someone continue to work on it if the work is in right way. LS’s engine looks very good, and if you compare it with FLEngine, just think when the time you want to add function to Freelancer, and you need to know LS can do almost anything he want in he’s engine. So be patiently to see a new thing glowing up.

Well the part I don’t get is then, why post a video about rain etc? I am also writing my own game engine, but you won’t see anything from it (unless you know me), even though I could show the graphics and physics (I get very positive feedback). I guess Skotty’s point is: Why make videos if there is not much to see. Or in my case to play ^^.
-
For me the release of any media is something like a request for feedback. My feedback was not positive, because for me it’s not so special.
-
C’mon guys, it’s a tech demo! He’s building this engine himself from scratch, as he gives the engine new features he’s just showing a demonstration of them working.
What you should do is use your imagination a little. What I take from this is that the engine has the ability to allow a ship to fly through space, see a planet, fly to it, descend through an atmosphere and then when planetside experience weather conditions. That’s all positive stuff.

I like LS a lot, and I like what he’s doing too - but if this were true, shouldn’t it be shown in just that fashion?
I haven’t watched all the videos, maybe it already has been shown
Needless to say, looking forward to seeing more LS
-
See, this is what I mean, no imagination.

Well, this is a tech demo of a game in alpha stage, it’s not a trailer, it’s not a teaser, so of course you wont see any mammoth space stations under attack from a flotilla of dreadnoughts, it’s just made to show the “rain” capabilities of the engine, well, least the first version of the “rain”. I believe he mentioned he’s working on the “snow” part too, so I’ll be waiting to see that one also as I like the way he’s going with this project.
-
Actually this is simply a video of something I was working on (completed), FL has something similar but it is simply sheet rain (billboarded texture). In the video it is 3000 individual particles.
Anyways, his post didn’t bother me in the least. I’m willing to listen to all and weigh it accordingly.
EDIT : @ Sol, yeah the snow has been done, looks like a blizzard at warp

See, this is what I mean, no imagination.Hmm, I can see a huge problem in telling people to imagine what seeing a scene means about the overall game.
It is bad enough when you talk about a feature and it isn’t as perfect or quite what some hoped. Ask for them to dream the feature based upon a scene is tantamount to flamicide
Back to topic in hand, so the rain is akin to the planetscape of FL - or is there flight around a planet with different weather patterns which affect the flight dynamics and how your craft handles?
The difference between being told what you’re looking for, and imagining what you are looking at
-
That’s crazy talk Chips you nutter  The game doesn’t exist yet, all I’m doing is looking at the videos and using a little imagination, doesn’t mean anything, but if LS is reading feedback then he might like a little imagination in the mix. By the time he’s done with it a long long time from now who knows what it will look like or what features it might or might not have. Worry about it when the time comes.
Hey LS, remember I mentioned a while ago about you perhaps moving onto directX 11, don’t know if you’re aware but many of the games in development right now, some like battlefield 3 for example won’t be supporting directx 9 or win XP. Might be food for thought somewhere down the line.
-
DX 11, not anytime soon, I want to support older systems for the time being. Anyways, here is another demo showing some of the latest stuff…
-
Looks great to me!
But then I guess I’m easily pleased, LS.
Is the snow just for me? Brrrrr!!
-
I will attempt to convert you slowly by drip feeding you DX11 tessellation demos. It’s a whole new world LS.
Tessellation Land and Water demo.
Now that’s what you want your water to look like, did you see the inside of that cockpit? awesome.
-
Yep, and it’s a huge GPU hog that only works on a tiny tiny fraction of the user base he’ll have.
-
Ah, negativity! Tessellation is done on the graphics card in the tessellator, not by cpu, of course you only find this feature on a DX11 card, but hell, it’s 2011 now. It will be a few years from now by the time his game comes out.
-
DX 11 is still pretty new, plus I don’t have it. I will be considered later on but for now all I can do is watch the videos. Thanks anyways, I’ve actually seen the first video, I use YouTube to get ideas for graphic enhancements.
Funny part about the snow, thats what it’s doing outside right now.

But as you said, it could be more optimized / better methods by the time LS comes to release =]

My bad, he did say GPU, apologies FF, obviously I either need glasses or I should steel more carrots off you ST you mad wabbit! There’s no rush is there, I’ve got at least a couple more years to pester you about it LS.
