What about the 'run by' (W02bF…) Code in Universe.ini, for Custom Factions?
-
This is a question I hold for a long time, but always forget to ask:
What about the ‘run by’ (W02bF…) Code in Universe.ini, for Custom Factions?
I never bothered, and just used codes of an existing faction that more or less resembled the custom one. In don’t think it ever caused errors or crashed. Still i’d like to knpw whether there is a method of generating or calculating one? Or doesn’t it really matter at all??
Btw iirc Synth Food doesn’t have such a W02bF code either, as they have no base.

The use of the W names is pretty much only for audio files. Complete list below

As you can see they only go up to F54, so, any custom faction you want to make audio references for can be F55 upwards. Some of the factions are doubled because of the need to separate been “base” and “planet” i.e. Bretonia police & navy

Thanx!!
At one point I want to examine the audio files unpacked with Adoxa’s XML kit, and see how much work it’ll be… I expect an awful lot, because of all the different voices!
Anyway, I suppose the linking of a faction to this W02bF55 and up, will be done in the audiofiles themselves (in some metadata)? Because afaik it is nowhere in any of the .ini files making up a faction…

If you want to know why there are some factions twice in his run-by reference, take a look on adoxas: http://adoxa.hostmyway.net/freelancer/run_by.txt
There you can clearly see what exactly they say. -
I don’t think it matters, as I don’t think anyone ever says it. There’s only reference to it I could find (DATA\SCRIPTS\GCS\gcs_mlstand_w02af_01.thn), which has one reference (DATA\SCRIPTS\GCS\genericscripts.ini), which doesn’t seem to be referenced (the segment, not the file). Perhaps it’s a remnant from when dealers could talk.

Yeah I heard (more likely: read) that there was supposed to be much more talking in the game, like all the missions, rumors and bribes.

‘Run by’ is spoken by all the bartenders and bar patrons when you engage them in conversation. As in…'This place is Run by the Farmers Alliance, we don’t really run the place but have an understanding with those that do."
Notice that this is the only time the npc will turn it’s back on you, so you can’t see their lips. This is because DA did not synch up their lips for the faction names. It is also perfect for adding new factions because they don’t have to be synched up either.
http://freelancercommunity.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=284 Second post, a full explanation of the voices used. I have 58 custom 'run by’s in the UnderVerse (which has replaced over 5,000 voice files).

Hey All,
One thing we all have to keep reminding ourselves of, is that MS was getting antsey waiting for DA to complete the game.As a lesson learned, they “took” the came and made a few changes so they could start making money. There is no telling how really good this game could have been, if it had been finished by Roberts.
I am pleased to have heard MS (It does seem to be a disease!) may get out of the personal software market and turn to business software. I say good riddance. I grow weary of getting less for more money, and having to run my computer their way.
Anyway, there seem to be a lot of loose ends in the FreeLancer program. Just as the storyline lacks a cohesiveness and continuity. It is no small wonder Chris walked away, and why the original code got “lost”.

Thanx dude!! Very informative! I’m still reading it atm…

Also thanx to StarTrader for a bunch of tutorials I ran into via DwnUndr’s link
Btw that tutorial about saving an mp3 wrapped in a wav envelope was written for WinXP right? I don’t think that’s possible in Win7 anymore (but I’d LOVE to be proven wrong, here, so PLEASE let me know if there’s a method for that in Win7!!!
EDIT: to my (pleasant) surprise, the computer that I’m presently using, seems to be able to just save the mp3-wrapped-up-as-a-WAV just fine.
My previous ones (they never live long with me) with Win7 on it, couldn’t do it — I couldn’t even save a file as it was without changing anything, although I could play it in my sound editors; the system just refused to write the format, and as this happened on more than one computer, I presumed this was some fundamental issue in how Win7 handles sound files. But apparently this one can do it, under Win7.
Which is splendid

Tested again just now and the second thing the bartender said to me was “A liberty planet.” Go figure.
