Cube map to starsphere?
-
I have a cube map download here and I’m wondering if anyone knows how to go about turning it into a starsphere for freelancer? Does anyone have a cube it can be slapped on and it will just work? I summon the knowledge of the mighty starport to aid me in this task, or just tell me to piss off. Whichever, it’s all good

Try to catch Forsaken via pm/mail he has a couple of good cube based staspheres.

You can use any shape mesh for the skies, simply create a standard cmp model and rearrange the VMeshRef to match a starsphere’s layout. In a normal cmp is in a sub-part of the model, simply drag and drop it to make it attach to the root node. Ive used cubes, spheres, cylinders and diamond shapes, they all work. One of my Borg systems looks like the inside of a Borg cube using a cube model and 1 texture.

You is way cleverer than me LS, I aint got a clue where to begin.
I curse you damn starporters! You have failed me for the last time! I bet OP will help me.

I should be able to do it, give me a few….
-
I’ll give you more than a few, I’ve got 29 textures just like it from my darkstar one files. If someone can figure out a way to use them then they’re welcome to them provided I can have a copy of the starspheres too. Sound like a worthwhile trade to you?
-
@ Timmy,
I’ll do them, even though their a pain to cut, cuz my mouse is going out on me. All I ask is to be able to use a few.
-
You’re welcome to do whatever you want with them. I’ll upload them later on my good man and drop you a link. Might have some other goodies you can make use of to.

Sounds good, I gotta go to work soon, so I’ll start them tomorrow.

Sorry to butt in on your topic gents, but do you know any tutorials regarding starspheres?
I’m starting to think that the search option on this forum is a bit dodgy, as I sometimes don’t seem to be able to find even simple stuff, that just has to be on the forum somewhere…
Also tried Google, but the results seem to be in Chinese…
Maybe I have a search engine curse or something lol  -
Don’t know of any tutorials Mav, but what you can do, which is fairly simple, is replace textures in the vanilla starspheres. Just open them up with UTF and export and modify existing textures or import new textures. I found that simple enough to do and I’m no genius. They’re are mostly TGA textures but dds work fine. Just change the node from MIP0 etc to MIPS if you use dds. If you’re not sure what I mean by that then I can explain further.
Creating a new starsphere from scratch though, I’m clueless sorry. That’s why I’m begging here.

Been messing with them, almost got it. First off, they are grainy looking, very horrible to see. They look as bad or worse then freelancers. I’ll post some ss shortly.

@ Timmy,
Here’s a look at a seamless cube starsphere (background) with what you provided:
(sorry about the hiccups in it, had photoshop, ms3d, freelancer, and a few other programs running
 )

….So you done?
I have a question about cube map too, but that’s about How to made it?
I have few seamless texture, but i don’t know how to make a cube. Primary problem is the top and bottom cap, i don’t know how to make them seamless. Any link or topic to teach me? please. (And Don’t say “paint it by hand”, i already try many times but failed.)

If you want, I can make a tutorial on starspheres (backgrounds), though it might take a couple of days. Maybe the admins could put it somewhere were it help everyone out.

@ NeXoSE,
Give me a few days and I shall teach anyone wanting to learn.

Tutorials are always good m8, even when you know how something’s done, reading a tutorial sometimes reveals entirely different approaches or what not.
Looking forward to it.
