Freelancer and networking in the future
-
Hello all
First of all, sincere apologies if I’m not posting into the right section
I played Freelancer some years ago (other times, other worlds) and would want to play it again but having read this old topic, I wonder how the servers currently running would solve this (2020 is close now). I asked everywhere I could , but not much precisions until now.
Nevertheless I found this :
https://www.usenix.org/legacy/publications/library/proceedings/lisa97/failsafe/usenix98/full_papers/fiuczynski/fiuczynski_html/fiuczynski.html
(Hope it will be usefull, as I did not understand much LOL)So, my first question would be: Have FL communities already managed the issue (FL Hook?).
Furthermore, I don’t run Windows anymore since a few months (too much issues: Spywares increase, tons of viruses, bad updates, etc.), so I have learned that a native Linux application could be released (thanks to Ichiru). But does Librelancer will allow runing mods like Crossfire or Discovery?

Currently servers run on FLHook, no IPv6 as of yet.
Also with a correctly configured Wine Prefix (mainly with dotnet40 and directplay) FL runs in MP on wine.
Librelancer is not ready for production use yet, and has difficulties with Discovery (haven’t tried Crossfire). -
There’s nothing pointing towards IPV4 disappearing anytime soon, so that entire worry is unwarranted.

I will try again, many thanks.Librelancer is not ready for production use yet, and has difficulties with Discovery (haven’t tried Crossfire).
Copy that, I just hope it will run these mods some day.
Well understood, nevertheless, a few websites are talking about an IPv4 address exhaustion, here are 2 examples among others:

I’m not saying it’s not a potential concern, but between wider and wider use of NAT and IP exhaustion coming largely from mobile devices and IoT, there are ways to handle it without removing IPv4 from regular ISPs.
Home internet won’t lose IPv4 until it’s absolutely unavoidable, and FL’s gonna be long dead by then.

Yes, I have read about the same thing on a few websites.
To be honest, I think it is a shame that Microsoft never released the source code (they lost it ? Really?). All issues could have been avoided since a long time if they did.Any way, all the best for 2018 to all FL fans !
