GSL–Viewing Server info
-
I ask this to see what can be done about, Viewing Server Info without having the servers mod installed/activated?
I’ve noticed for many years now, that when you view the GSL and see all those servers, and the actual info you view for a certain sever is only for the mod you have installed in your FLMM. Why can’t it be set up, even though you don’t have that perticular servers mod so you can view the info just in case you’re interested in what mod the server uses?
I know that you can’t join the server without it, hell, I’ve been looking at it for 6 years+ now but, there should be a way just to view that servers info, connected/installed or not.
Is there any way to make this so? It is also a good place to advertise your Mod/Server/Website, without having to spend all your time searching forums just to learn more about it? By being able to do this, if you server does have a forum, (of which there are some that don’t) it would bring more players that may be interested in finding out more about that server and mod.
Just a thought that has been on my mind for a long time now and this question has never been addresed before that I can find.

Very good post…
I too have always been wondering if there could be a fix for this, because as you say it could be used to advertice for your forum and server without players having to download the mod, read through tons of posts on your forum and so on!
This is definitely something worth to look into and fix!

Thanks and I’ve seen and read about so much work going into other things that, imho, is not that seriously important atm and getting players to noticed who you are and what mod you have running on your server that’s listed, can be of importance if you intend on gather more players as many want and post about.
I can see the server, IP, etc… and even though I may not want to join the server, I would like to be able to view their info. Just in case. One of the best places to support your mod and/or forums aside from your server is to add the info to the GSL where most are going to go to more than a forum.

I guess this was short lived without a care. It’s just been something I’ve wondered about for over 6 years now.

-- REMOVED = remove client-side server version check ```This will allow you to view the information of any server in the list. It will also, however, allow you to connect to any server in the list, even if it is an incompatible version. The "HIDE SERVERS WITH INCOMPATIBLE BUILDS" function still works though.

Dunno if it is wise to give away this information in public, TBH.

Well, you could already connect to any server you wanted to without downloading the mod by changing the version resource using ResHacker, though I suppose this makes it a bit more accessible. I guess I’ll remove it until I get some more feedback on the issue.

I’ve been wondering about this issue for 6+ years now. If I can’t be allowed to view the Server mod Info then why the hell would I want to go there? If it were only a 1.0 Original version, there would be no reason to view server / mod information. There is none. You already know what it’s got.
Being able to view what mod they’re running or website info would naturally bring not only more players to the server, but to the forum for that server too. I don’t see any reason to keep it a secret. Why do you? That’s what the, “Hide Locked Servers Option with a Password” is for. That’s also why there’s that option in the FLServer when you start it, to keep public players from joining a server that is only meant for an assorted few such as clans, friends or, family players. Not to mention as to how many you wish to allow or to join the server,
The way I see it is ; Ah, I wonder what this server is about? Hunh, no info, how do I find out about this server? I see now, Players = …. 0/128?
I don’t see reason to keep it a secret or to make it private.
Thanks M0tah.

Not necessary that way. Think about WHY servers decided to set up the version info: Because otherwise players, not necessary with bad institutions, could crash the server. Not they want to, but such accidents could happen quite frecently. Being able to visit those servers with a client side hack would make it vulnuable again to those guys.

Now that I found this thread again, I see and got it.

we should find out how cryo does it here is his list of active servers
http://flstat.cryosphere.co.uk/global-list.php
it lists the info of servers he supports on his site but he doesn’t it often i have been waiting since august to be updated.

I dont see a problem with this info in public as anyone who’s able to use it as hack will also be able to hack a server in other ways (for example by editing the client version).

Give this a try. It allows all servers to be selected so you can see the descriptions, but still prevents connection if the version doesn’t match. As usual, copy it to your EXE directory and add it to the [Libraries] section of dacom.ini. No source this time…
