Rar archiving Fastest?
-
From my experience, I’d say - the slower the better. As long as it doesn’t take 3 hours to compress a 500mb file, (:P) you should take your time when doing this.
On the other hand, I’m curious as to what’s the limit when compressing a large file. Any ideas?

.7z
But better don’t use the ultra compression rate

You should never encounter bugs when compressing, no matter the speed or type of compression. If you do, something is deeply wrong about the software or computer you’re using.
As far as performance and compression goes, 7-Zip with 7z format currently is the best for both of those, but as long as you avoid WinZIP (which must be the brainchild of StarTrader for how it still doesn’t use multicore CPUs ^^), you’re fine.

WinZip?!!
Nah - too old!
I use WinRar 3.3 - very old, on a very old licence!
Didn’t like 7z’s menu layouts!
ROFL!

You’re terrible, ST

Eh well, why change something that works superbly?
Eventually I’ll replace my laptop when its processor or screen or memory fails, or the keyboard stops working, or I finally wear the paint completely off it.
As for my desktop - well, the keyboard can be replaced, so can the monitor, and the cpu and the fan too! And I’m sure I’ve got a spare IDE disk somewhere….!
I wouldn’t buy any of the new Mercedes cars because they are full of computer bits. Can’t service them without another 'puter bit! And if something goes wrong the car’s naffed.
My old 300SEL and 380CE that I had over 10 years ago were the best Mercedes ever made, and sadly, never to be repeated.
Same for almost everything else in life. My Volvo V70 shows “Transmission Service Required” and the dealer doesn’t want to commit as to what it needs, could be anything from oil and filter change to gearbox replacement he says! And the price? £75 per hour, with no definition of how long it will take even for an oil change! WTF?!! It also shows “Emission Service Required” and it seems this is because the filler cap was not tight at some point, and it won’t reset by itself, needs to go to the dealer! At £75 per hour? WTF2!!
What Volvo’s Gods (is it still in Sweden or is it in China too now?) have not realised is that, far from supporting their dealers, they have destroyed all faith in Volvo car dealers since they can’t show they know what is wrong to this degree of vagueness!
And they can’t repair an auto gearbox, only replace it? The main dealer? Huh? WTF3!!
How difficult would it be to program a few more accurate sensor feedbacks so that the faulty component is precisely known? I did it as a project on my old Hillman Minx in 1974! Even made an intermittent wiper unit, and it worked for 3 years until I sold the car - it was almost always raining then!
So why can’t Volvo do it today?
So as long as this car still runs, it ain’t going to see another Volvo dealer for the rest of its life!
I also bought a new toaster last week, guess what? It does not fit a normal UK slice of bread, the top 1" sticks out of the top and it stays white!!! Can you believe it? Chinese bread is smaller!! So are the brains of their designers of the sht we buy from them, since almost everything they make is not to the standard we expect - but then the whole population wants cheapo cheapo - so the quality is no longer a concern, is it? Because I don’t hear the Great British Public complaining or refusing to buy the crap! The good thing is the Chinese entrepreneurs are buying the new shtty Mercs and BMWs! I’m happy they will be paying lots of dosh servicing them by inefficient unknowing Chinese mechanics! Hope they change everything 3 times over the life of the car on every car!
Ahem <clears throat=“”>…
Ras, my friend:
It’s a case of…
I’m writing this very slowly because I know you are a slow reader…
And I’m writing this line VERY quickly because I know you are a fast reader!
Did you see the difference?
No?
There is none.
Some can read fast and others can only read slowly. The same with the PC decompressing the archive. The speed difference is only in the compression, the higher the compression ratio the longer the compression will take because the compressor tries lots more algorithms and re-iterations to get a smaller size.
The decompressor will decompress it without problems if the archive is good and intact, whichever compression ratio you use to compress it.
Heheheh… Can’t accuse me of not being entertaining! 8)</clears>

I find winrar zips and unzips anything and doesn’t screw up, least the files i use don’t seem to, but then i’m perfect lol
@ST
Funny you mention the size of toast. When i moved up here to Sweden from the UK a few years ago, i expected to miss a few things, decent tea for one, and toast oddly was the other.
Now any idiot can make toast and turn it brown, but it’s nice to dump two slices in the toaster and get the robotic servant to do it for you. Now my bread falls into the toaster with no protruding parts which led me to think based on your observations, is the bread the right size? It is swedish bread after all, so can’t be trusted to be the right size now can it? Further investigation has led me to this unhappy summary.
Toaster = made in china
Bread = swedish, wrong size so actually fits toasterConclusion = It’s now a full on conspiracy by the chinese to make toasters smaller, also they have infiltrated sweden, (bought Volvo) and got them to make the bread smaller thereby selling more toasters so people are happier. I’m not :-x
