actually after a little more work I think I can answer my own question.

Li01_01 in vanilla has 14 factions on base (so it’s possible to have up to 14), however only 3 offer missions.

After a little experimentation I’ve managed to get up to 6 factions offering missions from a single base, after that I get a server crash.

Hope this helps someone, hope my findings match other peoples.

I’m not sure you’ll ever really get a defend-the-base type of thing going, because it’s not the functionaility freelancer has. When you stick random mission/destroy mission vignettes in, and set the corresponding bases & NPCs up, you are relying on the fact that the game knows about those, and you are simply adding them to new areas, with different factions etc. Freelancer doesn’t have any other mission types coded, aside from the base destruct, eliminate-the-target (pilot & commodity variants) and the ship wave ones. Anyone?

If you don’t know with what to open a file open it with notepad and look at the encoding on the top e.g. UTF, then use the program you normaly use to open the files of that type.

I just have to say something here. “You must ask permission before any PvP”. Er, no. The npc’s don’t ask so why should i? “You must wait in dock for 10mins after being killed”. To quote John McEnroe, you cannot be serious. What the hell am i to do for 10mins? Pure lunacy. Apart from the basic no cheating, no racist remarks etc, that really should be it. I thought the idea of FL was to do what you want, not restrict the hell out of the player. I’m glad i don’t go that far (** checks own forum quickly **) 🙂
